ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 20-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team extended its win streak in the series with Penn State on Sunday (March 30), cruising to a 4-0 victory at the Varsity Tennis Center.
It marks the seventh consecutive win in the series for the Wolverines, who improve to 34-8 all-time against the Nittany Lions.
Alex Cairo and Will Cooksey went on a four-game win streak at No. 2 doubles to ride it to a 6-2 win, their first at the position as they improve to 12-6 as a duo. In their first match together this season, Patorn Hanchaikul and Mert Oral took a 5-1 advantage at No. 3 and hung on for a 6-4 decision as Michigan took the doubles point.
Bjorn Swenson wasted little time earning a first-set win over Marcus Schoeman at No. 2 singles and followed it up with a 6-2 second set to put Michigan up 2-0. Swenson stretches his singles win streak to five and tallies his 40th career singles victory.
Patorn Hanchaikul used three breaks to go up 5-0 on Sam Bossem in the first set at No. 3 singles. Bossem battled back, but Hanchaikul took the set 6-4 and stayed hot with a 6-1 second set to push Michigan ahead 3-0.
Mert Oral delivered his first match-clinching victory of the season, taking down Nolan Ranger 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6 to secure the team win.
Michigan wraps its home slate next weekend when it hosts No. 23 Illinois on Friday (April 4) and Northwestern on Sunday (April 6). The Wolverines will honor their senior class with a ceremony prior to Sunday's match against the Wildcats.
