Hobbs Nets Career High, U-M Heats Up Late over Iowa State

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The No. 6-seeded University of Michigan women's basketball team defeated No. 11 seed Iowa State, 80-74, on Friday (March 21) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Notre Dame's Purcell Pavilion. After trailing by as many as 10 points in the second half, U-M outscored Iowa State, 27-18, in the final 10 minutes to record the win.
All five starters scored in double figures, led by a career-high 28 points from Jordan Hobbs to tie the program record for most points in an NCAA Tournament game. Olivia Olson turned in 16 points, including a free-throw line jumper to seal the game for Michigan with 20 seconds left, with Greta Kampschroeder (13), Mila Holloway (12) and Syla Swords (11) each scoring at least 10 points. U-M hit 12 three-pointers in the contest, making eight in the second half and turned 18 Iowa State turnovers into 21 points.
With Michigan down five at the half, Iowa State scored the first five points of the third quarter to double the lead to 10, 42-32, just over a minute into the quarter. Michigan cut the lead to two, 42-40, on a pair of Hobbs free throws a few minutes later but the Cyclones answered again with a 9-2 run to maintain a nine-point lead.
Swords and Olson hit back-to-back triples on Michigan's final two possessions of the third quarter before the Cyclones scored at the buzzer for a 56-53 lead after 30 minutes.
U-M opened the fourth quarter on a 9-1 run that featured seven points from Olson and a layup from Holloway, forcing an Iowa State timeout with 7:03 remaining as Michigan grabbed a 62-57 lead. The layup from Holloway with 8:07 remaining gave U-M its first lead since the first half, with Michigan not relinquishing it the rest of the way.
After Iowa State hit back-to-back triples to pull within one right around the midway point of the quarter, Swords found Holloway for a three-pointer for a 69-65 lead at the 4:45 mark.
Hobbs cashed in on a turnaround floater in the lane for a 77-71 U-M advantage with 2:14 left, but Iowa State again answered with a three-pointer at the 1:22 mark to halve the lead. Following a pair of empty possessions for both teams, Olson hit a free-throw line jumper with 20 seconds remaining in the game for a 79-74 lead.
Swords split a pair at the line after Michigan forced a stop on the defensive end to account for the six-point win.
Michigan will face the winner of Notre Dame/Stephen F. Austin on Sunday (March 21).
