SARASOTA, Fla. -- Paced with top-10 finishes from juniors Mara Janess and Lauren Sung, the University of Michigan women's golf team posted an 869-spring opening total today (Monday, Feb. 17) to finish fifth at the Spartan Sun Coast Invitational at Palm Aire Country Club's Champions Course.
After three months of winter training, U-M embarked on its spring opener heading to Michigan State's spring event. With opening even pars from Janess and Sung, the Wolverines tallied a 292 first-round total to position themselves fifth. Heading back out for Sunday's second 18, Janess recorded a career-low-tying 70 (-2), while freshman Mimi Guo added a career-low 72 (E) to give U-M a 290 to help the Maize and Blue maintain the fifth spot with a 582 36-hole total.
With four birdies and 13 pars, Sung recorded her second career sub-70 round as her 69 (-3) along with Janess' second straight 70 (-2) helped U-M tally its first sub-par team total of 287 (-1) and open the spring with a fifth-place total of 869.
Using her two straight career-low-tying 70s, Janess led the Wolverines as she posted her first career top-five finish and tied her for third with a new career-low 212 (-4) -- bettering her previous best by four shots. With her second career sub-par 54-hole tally of 215 (-1), Sung helped Michigan place two among the top 10 as she tied for ninth -- her first top 10 of her career.
Guo rounded out the Wolverines' top three as she tied for 30th with a new career-low 221 (76-72-73), while classmate Suzie Tran tied for 37th at 222 (73-74-75).
The Wolverines will continue their spring heading back to the Sunshine State, as U-M makes its fifth straight appearance in Florida's Gators Invitational at the Mark Bostick Golf Course, Friday through Sunday (March 7-9). Last season, the Maize and Blue tied for sixth. The Wolverines did share the team title in 2022.
