
Wolverines to Open Spring in Florida at Spartan Sun Coast Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After three months away from competition for winter training, the University of Michigan women's golf team will open its spring season traveling to Sarasota, Fla., Sunday and Monday (Feb. 16-17) for the Spartan Sun Coast Invitational hosted by Michigan State. The two-day, 54-hole event features a 15-team field with each day starting with 8:15 a.m. starts. The Palm Aire Country Club is scheduled to be set up for a par 72 and 6,191 yards.
Notes
• The Spartan Sun Coast Invitational will be made up of 15 teams, including Charleston, Florida International, Georgia Southern, Grand Valley State, Illinois, Kent State, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Purdue.
• U-M will travel five starters to the spring opening event. The Maize and Blue will start junior Mara Janess, sophomore Grace Wang, freshman Mimi Guo, junior Lauren Sung, and freshman Suzie Tran.
• Michigan played in four events during its fall season, highlighting it with a tie for sixth at the Mary Fossum Invitational. As a team, the Wolverines posted a 298.08 per-round average.
• In the fall season, the Maize and Blue had at least one Wolverine close among the top 20 in all four events. The duo Tran (15th) and Guo (t-16th) paced U-M in their collegiate debuts at the Boilermaker Classic. Janess and Sydney Sung then guided the Wolverines at the Mary Fossum with top 10 finishes (t-7th and t-9th, respectively) followed by top 20s at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational (t-15th and t-19th, respectively). In the fall finale in Hawaii, Lauren Sung's t-16th led U-M at the Nanea Invitational.
• Three Wolverines are in a battle for the scoring lead as Lauren Sung leads with her 75.67 average. Janess is slightly behind at 74.75 while Tran is at 74.92. As a team, the Wolverines are shooting 75.67 per round. Janess, Sydney Sung, and Tran started all four events in the fall season, while Lauren Sung had three starts in four events.
• Newcomer Tran is third on the Wolverines with a 74.92 scoring average. She is one of three Wolverines to have started all four events, including leading the Maize and Blue in her career debut at the Boilermaker Classic (t-15th). Her consistency has been key as she has 224, 224, 225, and 226 tallies in her four 54-hole events.
• In four events, Janess is second on the Wolverines with a 74.75 per round average -- which is on a career-best by over 1.5 strokes (76.26). She posted back-to-back career-low 54-hole tallies of 216 at the Mary Fossum and Ruth's Chris Tar Heel. She added a career-low 70 in the first round of the Tar Heel.
• Sydney Sung posted back-to-back career-best 54-hole totals and two straight top-20 finishes during the fall, including a career-best tie for ninth at the Mary Fossum Invitational. After her career-best 218 total at the Mary Fossum, she followed with a 217 at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational. She is averaging a career-best pace of 75.58 per round.
• On the professional front, Ashley Lau, Monet Chun and Hailey Borja start to play on the Epson Tour at the Central Florida Championship (Feb. 28-March 2) in Winter Haven, Fla., at the Country Club of Winter Haven.
