Wolverines Rally Past Indiana, KBA Becomes Winningest Coach

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team scored 31 points in the final quarter and erased a five-point deficit over the last four minutes in a 70-67 win over Indiana on Wednesday evening (Feb. 12) at Crisler Center. With the win, head coach Kim Barnes Arico passed John Beilein as the winningest coach in Michigan basketball history with 279 wins.
Down by as many as seven points in the fourth quarter and five with just four minutes remaining, Michigan got 15 fourth-quarter points from Syla Swords and 11 from Jordan Hobbs to rally for the win. Indiana took a five-point lead with just under four minutes before Swords cashed in on her third three-pointer of the quarter to pull Michigan within a bucket.
The Hoosiers had an answer on their ensuing possession, pushing the lead back to four with 2:37 left. Michigan got a free-throw-line jumper from Mila Holloway, followed by a layup from Hobbs to tie the game at 61 and force an Indiana timeout with 1:48 left.
Holloway tied up the Indiana ballhandler on the next possession, getting the steal as Michigan had the possession arrow. Hobbs made a layup with the foul, converting the three-point play for a 64-61 U-M lead at the 1:06 mark. Following an Indiana layup that trimmed the lead to one, Swords made good on a lefty layup with 29 seconds left to regain a three-point lead.
Indiana again answered, but Swords hit four straight free throws, the last with eight seconds remaining as Michigan continued to hold a three-point lead. U-M was whistled for a foul with two seconds left, but Indiana missed both free throws to provide the three-point margin.
Michigan had a trio of double-figure scorers, led by a career-high 24 points from Hobbs on 10-for-13 shooting from the field. Swords scored all 15 of her points in the final quarter, with Olivia Olson chipping in 13. U-M weathered a 37-26 Indiana advantage on the glass by hitting six triples to Indiana's three.
After a 15-15 tie to end the first quarter, Indiana scored five straight in the middle stages of the second quarter, forcing a Michigan timeout at the 6:40 mark as the Hoosiers took a 24-19 lead.
Greta Kampschroeder hit a triple out of the timeout to stop the Indiana run, with Ally VanTimmeren and Hobbs following with buckets as Michigan regained the lead, 26-24. Indiana scored five of the final six points of the half, taking a 29-27 lead into the break.
Indiana scored four straight to start the third quarter for a six-point lead before Olson hit a hanging jumper from 17 feet. A Holloway bucket and another from Olson erased the Hoosier lead as U-M uncorked a 10-2 run to force an Indiana timeout with 6:46 remaining in the third as U-M grabbed a 37-35 lead.
Hobbs made good on a layup for a 39-35 lead with 5:26 left in the third, but Michigan did not score again and the Hoosiers ended the quarter on an 11-0 run for a 46-39 lead after 30 minutes of action.
U-M has the weekend off and will hit the road for a Monday (Feb. 17) contest at Maryland. The game is set for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
