ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team closed the dual strong, winning four of the final six weights, but could not overcome a sizable early deficit in a 25-14 loss to No. 4 Ohio State on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 1) in front of 6,459 fans at Crisler Center.
Michigan earned ranked wins at three weights, none more exciting than graduate student Josh Heindselman, who used a third-period takedown to edge seventh-ranked Nick Feldman 4-2 in the final bout of the day. Heindselman, ranked ninth in the latest InterMat poll, countered an OSU single leg to scramble for the go-ahead takedown midway through the final frame, then used another wild scramble off a restart in the final 30 seconds to stave off Feldman and hang on for the win. He avenged his bloodround loss to Feldman at last year's NCAA Championships and improved to 17-1 on the season.
Graduate students Chase Saldate and Jacob Cardenas earned major decisions over their ranked opponents at 157 and 197 pounds, respectively. Saldate got the Wolverines on the board just before the intermission break, posting takedowns in the first and third periods in route to an 8-0 major decision against 17th-ranked Sammy Sasso. Saldate, ranked 15th, finished on a double midway through the opening frame and countered for his score in the third, both times riding out the period to accumulate 2:45 in advantage time. It was Saldate's second straight ranked win.
Cardenas, ranked second at 197 pounds, stayed perfect on the season with an 11-2 major decision against the Buckeyes' 18th-ranked Seth Shumate. Cardenas scored three takedowns -- one per period -- with two doubles and a late counter score in the third to seal the bonus point after his point for 2:41 riding time. Cardenas improved to 14-0 with 11 bonus wins; it was his fifth straight ranked win in Big Ten action.
Sophomore/freshman Beau Mantanona came up one point of earning bonus himself with a 12-5 decision against e'Than Birden at 165 pounds. Mantanona, ranked 10th, scored three takedowns -- two in the first period -- and a reversal to control from start to finish. He pushed the pace late in the bout in search of one more takedown, earning a pair of stall calls but nothing else to settle for the decision -- his fifth dual win since returning from injury.
Michigan was close to a fifth match win at 174 pounds, where fifth-year senior Joseph Walker fell to fifth-ranked Carson Kharchla 5-3 on a late takedown. The score was knotted 2-2 after a Walker escape in the third and, after a few back-and-forth flurries, the Buckeye shot in deep on a single leg, Walker fended it off on the edge for several seconds but gave it up with just 16 seconds remaining for the winning score.
The Wolverines (5-4, 2-3 Big Ten) will hit the road next, traveling to State College, Pa., to face top-ranked Penn State at 6 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 7) at the Bryce Jordan Center. The dual will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
