
Maize Tops Blue in Annual Intrasquad Exhibition Matchup

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's gymnastics team kicked off the 2026 season with its annual Maize and Blue Intrasquad on Saturday (Dec. 6), with the Maize squad defeating the Blue squad 237.900-236.600. With the win, Team Maize snapped a two-meet losing skid to Team Blue.
The meet consisted of a traditional format, with Team Blue starting on the floor exercise and Team Maize starting on the pommel horse. Judges counted three scores on all six events, with as many as six gymnasts per team competing on each apparatus.
Maize led the entire meet, securing a win for the first time in three years. Senior Fred Richard took home the parallel bars and high bar titles while placing in the top three in his other three events. In their first appearances for the Wolverines, freshmen Eli Osuna and Adam Lakomy won the floor exercise and vault, respectively. Sophomore Aaronson Mansberger took home the pommel horse title, while junior Akshay Puri won the still rings title. Solen Chiodi and Eli Osuna were the only Wolverines to compete as all-arounders.
How it Happened
Rotation 1
Freshman Chase Pappas started off the meet for Team Blue with a strong performance on floor exercise, scoring a 13.000. Over on the pommel horse, junior Jake Islam led things off for Maize with a 12.950. Osuna wowed the crowd in his first appearance for the Wolverines, finishing with an incredible stick on his last tumbling pass to earn a 13.750 and the floor exercise title. Mansberger anchored the rotation with a team-leading 14.600 on pommel horse, tying his second-best career score and taking the event title.

Rotation 2
Freshman Joseph Hale opened the rotation with an 11.750 on pommel horse for Blue, while Islam came up big for Maize on floor exercise with a huge hit on his final pass to score a 13.400. Chiodi followed up for Maize with a tremendous floor exercise routine, adding 13.200 to the team total.

Rotation 3
Islam helped add to Team Maize's lead with a strong showing on vault, scoring a 14.050 to take second place. Lakomy followed that up with the best vault performance of the day, scoring a 14.100 for the event title. Richard showed off his strength with a 13.250 on still rings to give Team Blue a push, but it was not enough to close the gap and Team Maize extended its lead.

Rotation 4
Puri maintained Team Maize's lead with a big routine on still rings, earning a score of 13.450 for the event title. Pappas had an impressive performance of his own on his first vault for the Wolverines with a 14.050 to tie for second. Senior Robert Noll followed with another solid routine for Team Maize on still rings, adding 13.250 to the team's total, while junior Charlie Larson notched a 13.650 on vault for Blue.

Rotation 5
Starting off strong on the high bar, junior Alex Istock stuck his landing and scored a 12.800 to help Team Maize extend its lead before Noll added to Team Maize's point total with a 13.050. Richard took home the parallel bars, adding 14.000 points, but Blue still found itself trailing.

Rotation 6
Osuna clocked in a solid performance on high bar to give Team Blue a boost of 12.600 points. Sophomore Carson Eshleman followed with a 13.500 on high bars for Team Blue. Richard put up another impressive score on high bar, posting a 14.300 for the event title. For Team Maize, Chiodi finished second on parallel bars. His score of 13.100 was enough for Team Maize to secure the win.
