Jones Punches Ticket to NCAA Singles Championship

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Lily Jones punched her ticket to the 2025 NCAA Singles Championship after advancing to the semifinals of the ITA Sectional Championships as Michigan wrapped up play at the event this weekend (Nov. 6-8). Jones secured her second straight NCAA Singles Championship berth by winning three consecutive three-set matches.
Needing to reach the semifinals to qualify, Jones rallied for a 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 victory over Texas A&M's Violeta Martinez in the quarterfinals. In a match that lasted more than two and a half hours, Jones closed out the final two games to avoid a tiebreak and clinch the win. After dropping the first set and trailing 4-2 in the second, she fought off a pair of match points before winning five of the final six games to force a decisive third set.
In the deciding set, Jones jumped ahead 2-0 and later 5-2 before Martinez responded with three straight games, fighting off a match point to even the score at 5-5. Jones regrouped and claimed the final two games to secure the victory and earn her NCAA berth.
Jones and Piper Charney will represent the Wolverines at the NCAA Singles Championship, scheduled for Nov. 18-23 at the USTA National Campus in Lake Nona, Fla.
