LAKE NONA, Fla. -- Lily Jones and Piper Charney each won their first-round singles matches on Tuesday (Nov. 18) as the University of Michigan women's tennis team was perfect on the first day of action at the 2025 NCAA Singles Championship at the USTA National Campus.
Jones was on court first for the Wolverines, starting the day with one of the first matches to go on against No. 12 Theadora Rabman of North Carolina. Jones fell behind early, dropping the first two games before ripping off four straight for a 4-2 lead. Rabman got back on serve with two straight games, but Jones converted on the ensuing deuce point for a 5-4 lead with a break. She served it out in the next game to take the first set.
Jones broke to start the second set, but Rabman won six of the next seven games to force a third behind a 6-3 win.
Down a break at 3-2 in the third, Jones broke to get back on serve at 3-3. Following a hold on the deuce point in the next game, Jones broke again for a 5-3 lead. She served it on during the next game, winning the final four games of the match to advance to the second round for the second straight season behind the 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory.
Charney, seeded No. 3, picked up a 7-5, 6-2 win over Emma Kramper of Utah. Charney took advantage of a late break in the first set, winning the final two games to take the early lead.
It was all Charney in the second set as she won the first two games and never looked back in the win.
Charney and Jones are back in action Wednesday (Nov. 19) in the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship.
