ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team posted four falls and claimed nine total bouts en route to a dominant 40-3 win against Virginia in its final dual of the first semester on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 23) at the Crisler Center. It was the Wolverines' most falls in a dual since tallying five against Sacred Heart in 2015.
Graduate student Lachlan McNeil and redshirt freshman Cameron Catrabone recorded back-to-back pins at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively, heading into the intermission break, while redshirt sophomore Beau Mantanona and graduate student Taye Ghadiali added first-period falls in the dual's second half. It was Beau Mantanona's second pin of the season and the first for the other three Wolverines.
McNeil, ranked fifth at 149 pounds, came out on top of an extended second-period scramble against Wynton Denkins, first putting the Cavalier in neutral danger for a takedown before securing the pin at 4:39. Catrabone followed just minutes later, sticking 18th-ranked Colton Washleski at 1:20 for the highest-ranked win of his career. Ranked 27th, he locked up a standing cradle to earn seven early points, then returned Washleski to the mat in a tilt for a four count and the fall.
Beau Mantanona, ranked 13th at 174 pounds, scored two early takedowns against Emmitt Sherlock after locking up cradles in scrambles and earned the pin at 2:12. His brother, redshirt freshman Brock Mantanona, added bonus points with a 21-6 technical fall against Griffin Gammell at 184 pounds. Ranked seventh nationally, he tallied six takedowns -- including three in the third period -- to end the bout early at 5:50.
Ghadiali, ranked fifth at heavyweight, closed out the dual with Michigan's third first-period fall, pinning Brenan Morgan in a half at 2:04. After surrendering an early duck-under takedown, he escaped immediately, answered with a go-behind and worked the half for the pin. The graduate student improved to 5-1 on the season, all five wins coming with bonus.
Michigan opened the dual with back-to-back decisions from graduate student Diego Sotelo and freshman Gauge Botero at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively. Sotelo, ranked 26th, defeated No. 20 Keyveon Roller, 11-5, behind takedowns in the first and third periods and 2:02 of riding time. Botero added a 7-1 win over Aiden Allen with takedowns in both the first and third frames.
Redshirt sophomore Dylan Gilcher and redshirt freshman Hayden Walters rounded out the Wolverine winners with decisions at 165 and 197 pounds. Gilcher, ranked 15th, nearly rode out the third period against Michael Murphy before scoring the go-behind to ice a 5-1 victory. Walters, ranked 20th, countered a double-leg attempt in the third period and used a strong mat return to finish his 8-5 win over Steven Burrell Jr.
The Wolverines (4-2) will take a weekend off for Thanksgiving before returning to the mat at the annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 5-6, at the Westgate Hotel Paradise Event Center in Las Vegas, Nev. Action begins at 9 a.m. PT on Friday.
