CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team completed play at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships on Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 21), with Lily Jones knocking off teammate Emily Sartz-Lunde in the third-place match to highlight Michigan at the event held at the Atkins Tennis Center.
Down 5-3 in the first set to Sartz-Lunde, Jones ripped off four straight games to take the first set, 7-5. She carried that momentum over into the next set, winning five of the first six games en route to the 7-5, 6-2 victory.
Jones raced to a 6-0 first-set win over Notre Dame's Bianca Molnar in the singles main draw semifinals. Jones won the first two games of the second set before Molnar got on the board at 2-1. Molnar won six of the final eight games of the second set, forcing a deciding third set. Neither player held serve over the first four games, with Molnar holding at 3-2. Jones returned the favor for a 3-3 tie at the midway point of the set. Molnar broke Jones for a 5-3 advantage and went back to serve for the match. She grabbed three match points, but Jones fought off all three to stay in the set. Molnar again grabbed three match points in the next game, converting on her fourth overall to wrap up a 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 win.
Sartz-Lunde's run came to an end in straight sets to No. 60 Nao Nishino in the semifinals. Sartz-Lunde fell in early holes in both sets and could not make up ground.
Jones and Jessica Bernales, along with Reese Miller and Gabriella Lindgren, advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles main draw.
Michigan had eight Wolverines compete in the singles main draw as Bernales, Miller, Lindgren, Laura Rahnel, Laura Maser and Bayley Sheinin joined Jones and Sartz-Lunde.
U-M continues fall action next weekend (Oct. 24-26), heading to Rome, Ga., for the Rome Invite.
