ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan football team recorded its fifth win of the season against Washington on Saturday (Oct. 18) at Michigan Stadium. The 24-7 win came on the back of a dominant defensive performance by the Wolverines, holding Washington to 249 total yards. Coming into the game, the Huskies were averaging 39.2 points per game, good for fourth in the Big Ten.
All three of Michigan's touchdowns came courtesy of players whose last names contained "Marsh" -- Andrew Marsh, Jordan Marshall and Zack Marshall.
In a game where points were hard to come by, Michigan's 17 points off turnovers proved to be the difference in the contest. Cole Sullivan and Jimmy Rolder combined to bring down interceptions on back-to-back drives, and Derrick Moore forced a fumble on a fourth-down sack for a turnover on downs. The offense capitalized on the favorable field position, with Jordan Marshall and Zach Marshall scoring touchdowns following the INTs, and Dominic Zvada adding a field goal.
In the fourth quarter, Jacob Oden hauled in his first collegiate interception, marking the fourth consecutive Washington drive ending in a turnover, ending a rough game for a solid Huskies offense.
Playing without important starters, both Marshalls stepped up in the absence of Marlin Klein and Justice Haynes. Jordan set a career high with 133 yards on the ground, while Zack posted 71 yards on five catches, double his career receiving yards of 29.
Both offenses struggled early on in the contest, with both teams missing field goals in the first half and a turnover on downs.
Despite the early struggles, it was the Wolverines who opened the scoring late in the first quarter. They drove 80 yards down the field, 68 of them through the air from Bryce Underwood, closing out the drive with a 22-yard screen pass to Andrew Marsh, his second straight game with a receiving touchdown.
Underwood put up his third straight game of 200 passing yards, finishing the game with 230 yards, to go with his two touchdown passes.
On top of the turnovers, the Wolverines forced four punts, holding the Huskies to 54 yards in the second half. The lone Washington score came with 40 seconds remaining in the second quarter, as Jonah Coleman punched in his FBS-high 12th rushing score of the season from one yard out.
Michigan will travel to East Lansing to take on Michigan State on Saturday (Oct. 25) in the battle for the Paul Bunyan Trophy. The game is set for 7:30 p.m., and will air on NBC.
