MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan men's cross country team finished 15th at the Nuttycombe Invitational hosted by Wisconsin on Friday (Oct. 17), led by Nathan Lopez's 24th-place finish.
New Mexico (51) won the meet, with Colorado (150) and Syracuse (152) finishing second and third, respectively.
Following the first two kilometers, the Wolverines sat in 18th place with Brendan Herger (15th place) leading the squad.
U-M fell one spot to 19th at the halfway mark, with Lopez moving up three spots to 45th as the team's lead runner. Luke Venhuizen and Trent McFarland were neck-and-neck in 83rd and 84th, respectively, after McFarland moved up 31 spots and Venhuizen moved up six.
Heading into the final two kilometers, Lopez improved by 16 spots to maintain his lead of the Wolverine contingent in 29th place. Venhuizen continued to move up in the standings, sitting in 58th after improving by 24 spots, while McFarland fell eight spots to 92nd.
Lopez was Michigan's lead runner for the second straight scoring meet, coming in 24th place with a time of 23:40.6. Venhuizen remained in second position for the Wolverines (65th place; 24:05.5), and McFarland was third (91st place; 24:23.6) in the team's 15th-place finish.
Freshman Luke Alverson made his collegiate debut, finishing 154th with a time of 24:58.0.
In the B Race, William Beardsley led the way with a 14th-place finish (24:43.5) while Kyler McNatt was just behind him in 19th place (24:44.4).
Michigan will finish its regular-season schedule at 4:30 p.m. next Friday (Oct. 24), when it heads to the Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter, Mich., to compete in the EMU Fall Classic.
