
Wolverines Ready for Pair of Ranked Foes

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team (2-0) will hit the road for the first time this season, heading to No. 5-ranked Virginia (6-0) for a Saturday morning (Feb. 1) match at 11 a.m. U-M will return to the Varsity Tennis Center on Tuesday (Feb. 4) to host No. 21-ranked Florida at 5 p.m.Â
Notes
• Michigan continues dual-match action this weekend, heading to No. 5-ranked Virginia to face the Cavaliers on Saturday (Feb. 1) and then hosting No. 21-ranked Florida on Tuesday (Feb. 4).
• Saturday's match at Virginia will be the fifth time the teams have faced off since February 2023. U-M has won the last four against the Hoos to even the all-time series at 6-6.
• Michigan and Virginia faced each other twice last season, coming in a span of a week. Michigan picked up a 5-2 win at the VTC on Feb. 3 and a 4-1 victory in the quarterfinals of the 2024 ITA National Team Indoor Championship (Feb. 10). This is U-M's first trip to Charlottesville since a 4-1 Virginia win on Feb. 15, 2020. Â
• This is Michigan's first road match of the season. U-M went 8-1 on the road last season.
• The Wolverines will return home to host No. 21 Florida (2-1) on Tuesday (Feb. 4) at the VTC. The Gators are coming to Ann Arbor for the second straight season after U-M recorded a 4-1 win last year (Feb. 6). U-M is 2-6 all-time against the Gators.
• Florida features the No. 3-ranked doubles team of Rachel Gailis and Alicia Dudeney.
• Michigan moved up one spot to No. 7 in this week's rankings after going 2-0 last weekend. Michigan is scheduled to face No. 3 Oklahoma State, No. 5 Virginia, No. 6 UCLA, No. 9 Duke, No. 14 USC, No. 17 Ohio State and No. 21 Florida in the regular season. Michigan could face more ranked teams at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
• The Wolverines punched their ticket to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship last time out, getting a pair of shutout wins over Yale (Jan. 25) and UC Santa Barbara (Jan. 26).Â
• U-M has a trio of ranked singles players in No. 5 Julia Fliegner, No. 18 Piper Charney and No. 40 Lily Jones. On the doubles side, Jones pairs with Jessica Bernales to come in at No. 18 after competing in the NCAA Doubles Championship in the fall. Reese Miller and Fliegner rank No. 49, with Charney and Emily Sartz-Lunde coming in at No. 61.
• Virginia features five ranked singles players and four ranked doubles teams.
• Michigan has won three weekly honors from the conference this season, with Miller (Jan. 15) and Charney (Jan. 29) each picking up Player of the Week honors. Emily Sartz-Lunde was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Jan. 15.
• Head coach Ronni Bernstein enters her 18th season as the head coach, holding a 526-192 overall coaching record. She is currently eighth nationally among active coaches in wins. Bernstein ranks 18th all-time in victories.
• Michigan will next head to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship at Illinois, Feb. 7-9. The semifinals and championship match are being held at Northwestern (Feb. 10-11).
