ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team dropped its second straight dual to a top-10 team, falling to No. 7 Nebraska, 38-6, on Friday night (Jan. 24) in front of 2,971 fans at Crisler Center.
The Wolverines earned two match victories at the upper weights from graduate students Jacob Cardenas and Josh Heindselman at 197 pounds and heavyweight, respectively.
Cardenas stayed undefeated on the season with a 5-2 decision against 22nd-ranked Camden McDaniel. Cardenas, ranked No. 2 in the latest InterMat poll, scored on a first-period double leg and rode a good part of the third period to accumulate 1:22 in advantage time. He is now 12-0 and owns three straight ranked wins -- and his sixth this year.
Heindselman, ranked ninth at heavyweight, also used a quick start to earn a 9-6 decision over 21st-ranked Harley Andrews. He finished on a pair of first-period single legs, then canceled out a Nebraska takedown in the second with two escapes and a locked-hands penalty. Heindselman is 15-1 for the Wolverines this season.
Nebraska scored bonus points in seven of its eight wins, while the Wolverines let a handful of close matches get away from them late. Graduate student Chase Saldate, ranked 15th at 157 pounds, led 4-3 in the third period against No. 5 Antrell Taylor after a buzzer-beater takedown out of a scramble in the second, but Taylor went feet-to-back on a single leg to earn a fall at the 5:33 mark.
Freshman Beau Mantanona, ranked 10th at 165 pounds, was pushing for a winning takedown late in the third period against Christopher Minto -- down 3-2 with Husker riding time locked up after a second-period rideout and traded reversals early in the frame -- but gave up a counter takedown out of a scramble in the final :05 to ice the Nebraska decision.
The Wolverines (4-3, 1-3 Big Ten) will close out the home weekend on Sunday (Jan. 26), hosting No. 24 Indiana for Comic Book Day at 2 p.m. at Crisler Center. Tickets are still available through the U-M Ticket Office.
