ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team dominated rival No. 13-ranked Ohio State 197.5-102.5 on Saturday (Jan. 18) at Canham Natatorium. The win marks the first over the Buckeyes since the 2019-20 season.
Michigan (4-1, 2-1 Big Ten) got the rivalry meet started with a win in the 200-yard medley relay before reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Week Rebecca Diaconescu won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:42.66, outracing the closest swimmer by nearly six seconds.
Stephanie Balduccini posted a time of 1:46.81 to win the 200-yard freestyle, and Casey Chung took first in the 100-yard backstroke with a mark of 53.67 seconds.
Letitia Sim continued her run of dominance in the breaststroke events with a triumph in the 100-yard race with a time of 1:00.49.
The Wolverines swept the 200-yard butterfly as Hannah Bellard led the pack with a time of 1:58.02. Leila Fack took second with a mark of 2:01.38, and Ella Jo Piersma finished third after touching the wall in 2:01.62.
U-M took each of the top three spots in the 50-yard freestyle. Lindsay Flynn grabbed her first win of the meet with a time of 22.11. Brady Kendall posted a mark of 22.58 to finish second, and Claire Newman completed the sweep with a time of 22.91.
Flynn followed up with a victory in the 100 free with a time of 48.41. Balduccini followed close behind with a mark of 49.28. Sim dominated the 200-yard breaststroke, posting a time of 2:10.66, outracing the six-swimmer field by more than four seconds.
The Maize and Blue completed its third event sweep of the afternoon in the 500-yard freestyle. Diaconescu took her second win of the meet with a time of 4:47.89, Bellard clocked a 4:50.56, and Marian Ploger posted a time of 4:51.55.
Kendall led the Wolverines' dominance in the 100-yard butterfly, winning the event with a time of 53.57. Piersma finished second with a mark of 54.15, and Fack logged a time of 54.46 to take third.
Sim secured her third victory of the day in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:59.24 to round out the individual events.
The quartet of Balduccini, Flynn, Kendall and Newman closed the meet win with a first-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:16.79.
In the dive well, Kiarra Milligan grabbed the win on the three-meter with a score of 354.53.
Michigan closes its dual slate at Canham Natatorium on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m. when the Wolverines host Miami (Ohio) for Senior Day.
