CARY, N.C. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team completed action at the prestigious ITA All-American tournament on Sunday (Sept. 29) at the Cary Tennis Park.
Competing for Michigan at the event in the singles main draw were Piper Charney, Julia Fliegner and Lily Jones. Fliegner and Charney each reached the round of 16 in the singles main draw and made runs in the consolation bracket but could not clinch an NCAA Singles berth. There were 10 bids on the line at the tournament, with eight going to the main draw quarterfinalists and two to the consolation finalists.
Fliegner, ranked No. 12 nationally with the No. 10 seed for the tournament, fell to No. 1-ranked Mary Stoiana in the consolation semifinals to end the tournament for Michigan. Fliegner went 4-2 at the event, reaching the round of 16 in the main draw. She fell to No. 43-ranked Theodora Rabman indoors, 7-6 (7), 6-1 to enter the backdraw. Fliegner had a pair of set points in the first set but Rabman fought them off before outlasting Fliegner in the tiebreaker.
Fliegner regrouped in the backdraw, winning a pair of matches on Saturday (Sept. 28) against No. 56 Alina Shcherbinina of Oklahoma and NO. 89 Kailey Evans of San Diego. In the latter match, Fliegner found herself down a break at 3-4 before ripping off three straight games in the final set to get the win. Fliegner fell to No. 1-ranked Mary Stoiana of Texas A&M in the consolation semifinal, finishing with a 4-2 record at the national event.
Charney, just like Fliegner, reached the round of 16 in the main draw before falling to eventual finalist Maria Sholokhova of Wisconsin in three sets. In the third set, Charney was serving at 3-2 and was broken on the deuce point for a 4-2 Sholokhova lead en route to her win. Charney, ranked No. 55, dropped just three games in a straight-set win over No. 18 Carolina Gomez Alonso in the backdraw round of 16 before falling in three sets to No. 37 Sofia Johnson in the quarterfinals to end her tournament. Charney went 3-2.
Jones picked up a huge first-round win in the main draw, knocking off No. 11 Anastasiya Komar of Oklahoma State, 6-1, 7-5. She fell in the next round to enter consolation action, where she lost her first match to finish the tournament with a 1-2 record.
Michigan will continue fall action next weekend (Oct. 4-6), heading to South Bend to participate in the Notre Dame Invite.
