
Track and Field Olympic Updates: Sutherland, Canada Finish Sixth in 4x400m Relay

Saturday, Aug. 10
Savannah Sutherland has concluded the University of Michigan track and field team's run at the 2024 Olympics, finishing sixth a member of Team Canada's 4x400-meter relay.
Sutherland ran the second leg of the race, posting a split time of 50.06 seconds for the fastest leg of Canada's race. Team Canada finished sixth with a season-best time of 3:22.01.
The relay was the second event for Sutherland, who finished seventh in the 400-meter hurdles (53.88) in her Olympic debut.
Friday, Aug. 9
Cindy (Ofili) Sember (100-meter hurdles) and Dubem Amene (4x400-meter relay) finished their time competing at the Paris Olympics.
Amene was the first to compete, running the third leg of the relay for Team Nigeria. The team finished second in their heat with a season-best time of 2:59.81 to auto-qualify for the finals but were disqualified following the race due to a lane infringement violation from leadoff runner Emmanuel Ojeli.
Sember, in her third straight Olympic appearance representing Great Britain, looked to make the finals for the first time since finishing fourth in the 2016 Games. The five-time British national champion got off to a great start but caught her leg on the seventh hurdle and suffered a fall. She did not finish as a result.
Thursday, Aug. 8
University of Michigan track and field senior Savannah Sutherland closed out her first Olympic Games competing in the 400-meter hurdles final.
Representing Canada, she ran 53.88 seconds to finish seventh and come just 0.62 shy of her personal best. Team USA's Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone (50.37) won her second straight gold medal in the event, while setting the Olympic and world records. McLaughlin-Levrone's teammate Anna Cockrell and Femke Bol of the Netherlands earned silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Wednesday, Aug. 7
Two Wolverines took to the track, with alums Cindy (Ofili) Sember running the 100-meter hurdles and Ben Flanagan competing in the 5,000-meter run.
Sember, representing Great Britain, posted a time of 12.72 seconds to finish second in her heat and 10th overall. The five-time 100-meter hurdle British champion and three-time Olympian will advance to the semifinal round on Friday (Aug. 9) at 6:05 a.m. EDT.
Flanagan, running for Team Canada, finished 17th in his heat (13:59.23) and 17th overall in the 5,000-meter run. The first-time Olympian led the Canadian contingent, with Thomas Fafard (14:09.37) finishing 26th and Mohammed Ahmed (14:15.76) finishing 35th. Fafard is the lone runner of the trio to advance to the finals.
Tuesday, Aug. 6
Savannah Sutherland of the University track and field team advanced to the 400-meter hurdles finals after an incredible semifinals performance.
Running in the final heat of the day, Sutherland finished fourth in her heat and sixth overall with a time of 53.80 seconds. She will look to win her first Olympic medal in the event final on Tuesday (Aug. 8) at 3:25 p.m. EDT.
Monday, Aug. 5
University of Michigan track and field alum Sophie Linn and Team Australia earned a 12th-place finish in the triathlon mixed relay, less than a week after she finished 21st in the women's individual triathlon.
Luke Willian ran the opening leg of the race, finishing with a time of 20:15 before Natalie van Coervorden's leg (24:39) put the team in 14th place. Matthew Hauser edged the contingent up to 13th with a total time of 1:05:22 as Linn entered the race as the anchor with a split time of 23:28. The team finished with a final time of 1:28:50, 3:11 behind first-place finisher Germany (1:25:39). The United Stated (1:25:40) and Great Britain (1:25:40) rounded out the medalists.
Sunday, Aug. 4
Senior hurdler Savannah Sutherland has qualified for the 400-meter hurdle semifinals after a solid first round. Sutherland finished third in her heat and 12th overall with a time of 54.80. The semifinals will begin on Tuesday (Aug. 6) at 2:07 p.m. ET, with heats to be announced following the repechage round on Monday, Aug. 5.
Saturday, Aug. 3
Ayden Owens-Delerme concluded competition in Paris with a ninth-place finish in the decathlon.
Representing Puerto Rico, Owens-Delerme sat in second place in the overall standings after the first day of competition. Still in second after the opening event -- the 110-meter hurdles (14.09) -- he dropped to fifth after throwing 43.36m (142 feet, 3 inches) in the discus throw. He moved up to fourth with a clearance of 4.80m (15 feet, 9 inches) in the pole vault before finishing ninth (8,437 points) after running 4:40.39 in the 1,500-meter run.
Markus Rooth of Norway (8,796), Leo Neugebauer of Germany (8,748), and Lindon Victor of Grenada (8,711) made up the podium finishers.
Friday, Aug. 2
With the first five events of the decathlon contested, University of Michigan men's track and field alum Ayden Owens-Delerme sits in second place in his Olympic debut.
Representing Puerto Rico, Owens-Delerme has been strong to open the first of two days of competition. He has scored 4,608 total points, just 42 behind leader Leo Neugebauer of Germany, and never fell below fourth in the overall standings.
The first event set the pace for Owen-Delerme, who finished second in the 100-meter dash (10.35 seconds). Sitting in third heading into the fourth event, an eighth-place finish in the high jump (2.02m/6 feet, 7.5 inches) pushed him just outside medal range to fourth, but a leading time of 46.17 in the 400-meter dash edged him into second place with the final five events left.
Owens-Delerme will close out the decathlon on Saturday (Aug. 3) beginning at 4:05 a.m. EDT with the 110-meter hurdles.
Wednesday, July 31
University of Michigan track and field alum Sophie Linn made her Olympic debut, finishing 21st in the women's individual triathlon. She led the Australian contingent, with teammate Natalie van Coevorden placing 42nd (2:03.01).
Linn sat in 24th after the swimming leg of the race (24:03), moving up to 22nd after finishing the 40km bike ride with a time of 1:22.49 through the first two segments. With a time of 35:35 in the 10k run, her total time of 1:58.52 was 3:57 behind gold medalist Cassandre Beaugrand of France.
Linn has one more race on the schedule, with the mixed relay on Monday (Aug. 5) at 2 p.m. EDT.
