TORONTO, Ontario -- University of Michigan women's soccer alumna Jayde Riviere was named to the Canada Women's National Team Olympic roster on Monday (July 1). It marks the second Olympic games for Riviere, who was a member of the 2020 gold-medal winning squad. In addition, Shelina Zadorsky will travel to Paris as one of four alternates for the team.
In the 2020 Olympics, Riviere and Zadorsky helped Canada to a 1-0-2 record in group play, highlighted by a 2-1 win over Chile. Scoreless after extra time in the quarterfinal round, the Canadians defeated Brazil 4-3 on penalties to advance to the semifinals, where they knocked off the United States 1-0 on Aug. 2.
In the gold-medal game, Riviere came on as a substitute three minutes into the first session of extra time and logged 27 minutes in her traditional defensive role. Zadorsky checked in as a substitute in the 120th minute and played just under a minute of match time against Sweden. Canada prevailed in a penalty shootout, winning its first gold medal in women's soccer history.
Riviere appeared in 47 games during her time at Michigan, earning a spot on the Big Ten All-Freshman team in 2019. A mainstay on the back line for the Wolverines, Riviere tallied five points on a goal and three assists during her time at U-M.
Zadorsky was four-year letterwinner and 2013 team captain at Michigan. She helped the Wolverines to a 53-22-10 overall record and three trips to the NCAA Tournament, including the 2012 Sweet 16 and 2013 Elite Eight. Individually, she was a two-time All-Great Lakes Region and All-Big Ten defender.
Canada is in Group A, first facing off against New Zealand on July 25. Other group games are against France (July 28) and Colombia (July 31).
