HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. -- Earning medalist honors for the second time at the Big Ten Championships, senior Monet Chun guided the 37th-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team to an even-par 864 54-hole total and tie for fourth at the conference championship Sunday (April 21) at Bulle Rock Golf Course.
With a 209 (-7) championship total, Chun (73-66-70) won the second conference crown of her career sharing the top spot with Minnesota's Isabella McCauley (74-71-64) and Indiana's Caroline Craig (69-69-71). After winning the title in 2022 (205, -8), Chun added U-M's third Big Ten medalist honor in program history. Elodie Van Dievoet won U-M's first Big Ten title in 2017.
After being declared tri-medalists, Chun, McCauley and Craig went out for a sudden-death playoff to determine the designation of "medalist" for individual qualification to NCAA Regionals. After all three opened with pars on No. 18, the trio went out to No. 16, where Chun chipped in for a birdie to win the tiebreak.
For her efforts throughout the weekend, Chun was named to the All-Championships Team along with McCauley, Craig, Caroline Smith (Indiana), Lauryn Nguyen (Northwestern) and Katie Lu (Michigan State).
In addition to Chun's performance, fifth-year senior Hailey Borja helped U-M close the event with a pair of top-10 Wolverines. She saved her best for last in her final conference event. Posting her sixth career sub-par 54-hole total of 214 (-2, 71-73-70), Borja tied for seventh as she etched her first top-10 finish at the championship tournament. Her prior best finish was a tie for 16th in 2021.
In their first career Big Ten postseason event, freshman Sidney Yermish tallied a 224 (78-73-73) to a tie for 40th, while sophomore Mara Janess tied for 45th at 225 (71-75-79). Sophomore sisters Lauren Sung and Sydney Sung rounded out the Wolverine starters as they tied for 49th (227) and tied for 55th (229), respectively.
In addition to U-M's 13th top-five team finish at conference championships, the Maize and Blue highlighted the event with a pair of holes-in-one. In the first round, Janess used an 8-iron from 142 yards to record her ace on the seventh hole. In the second round, Chun used a 5-iron from 162 yards on the 17th hole for her ace.
The Wolverines shift their focus to a bid for an upcoming NCAA regional selection. The 72-team field and individuals (36) will be announced on Wednesday (April 24) during the live selection show on the Golf Channel at 2 p.m.
Regional play will take place Monday through Wednesday, May 6-8 at six different regional sites. The top five teams (a total of 30 teams) and the top individual not on an advancing team (six total) will advance to play in the NCAA Finals at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
