
Thomson, Wolverines Close Regular Season Third at Illini Spring Collegiate

» With an 881 54-hole total, Michigan closed its regular season with a third-place finish at the Fighting Illini Spring Collegiate played at the Atkins Golf Club. U-M finished with eight top-five finishes in 11 regular-season events.

URBANA, Ill. -- Junior Hunter Thomson used his 214 (+1) 54-hole total to tie for third individually helping the University of Michigan men's golf team post an 881 team total and post a third-place finish of its own Sunday (April 21) in the regular-season finale at the Fighting Illini Spring Collegiate played at the Atkins Golf Club.
With three Wolverines among the top 25, U-M posted its eighth top-five finish of the season. In Saturday's (April 20) opening 36-hole day, Thomson's 73 (+2) and 74s from redshirt junior Ben Hoagland and junior Yuqi Liu put U-M in a tie for fourth. Heading out for the day's second 18, Thomson carded a U-M tournament-best 69 (-2) to guide the Wolverines to a 292 and bump them up one position into a tie for third.
In chilly, but sunny final-round conditions, once again Thomson paced the Maize and Blue with a closing 72 (+1), while Hoagland and senior Will Anderson each posted 73s (+1) giving U-M a second straight 292 team score yielding an 881 54-hole total and a third-place finish.
Leading the Wolverines for the eighth time in 11 events, Thomson's 214 (73-69-72, +1) total tied him for third, giving him a sixth top-five finish this season. Hoagland followed with a fifth top-15 finish after his 220 (74-73-73) tied him for 12th. Meanwhile, Anderson recorded his seventh straight top-25 finish as his 223 (76-73-73) gave him a tie for 22nd.
With the 11-event regular season completed, the Wolverines start their postseason heading to the Big Ten Championships, Friday through Sunday (April 26-28). The three-day, 54-hole championship will be played at the Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio.
