Next U-M Event: Saturday, April 20 -- at Big Ten Invitational - Day 2 (Sarasota, Fla.), 8 a.m.
SARASOTA, Fla. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan rowing program competed during two racing sessions at the Big Ten Invitational on Friday (April 19). The Maize and Blue tallied eight first-place finishes and five second-place finishes across 14 total events highlighted by a sweep from the first varsity four and nice bounce-back afternoon showings from both varsity eight boats.
Michigan enjoyed more success in the second session than in the morning but still had strong showings throughout the first day of competition. The 1V4 and 3V4 picked up victories in the early going, and in the afternoon, U-M won six of seven events. Overall, it was valuable for the Wolverines to get in the water with other competitive teams, and the team is hoping for an even faster session on Saturday.
Temperatures were in the 70's by 8 a.m., moving into the 80's before the 11:00 hour and into the afternoon. Humidity was high in the morning but low winds kept the course smooth and ideal for racing. Winds picked up in the afternoon creating a slight chop and a crosswind effect.
The theme of fast starts from Tennessee was a thorn in Michigan's side during the morning session. Both varsity eights placed second to Tennessee behind open water and both races required a strong enough effort to hold off charging Rutgers boats. U-M was up to that task though, and earned a pair of second-place finishes.
Both varsity eights came back to win their afternoon events with Duke taking second both times. It was an open-water win for the 1V8 (+7.734 seconds) and a victory of more than four seconds for the 2V8. The second eight pulled free from Duke and UCLA in the first 750 meters and then kept a firm grip on the lead down the stretch.
The first and second varsity fours had the first races of the day. The 1V4 got off to a fantastic start, held off charges from Tennessee and Rutgers, and sprinted through for a win of more than four seconds. The second four was unable to catch Tennessee's early lead and finished second place (+5.534) to the Vols, ahead of Rutgers. Later in the morning, the third four picked up another win for the Maize and Blue. U-M started quickly and held off a feisty Rutgers boat through the first 1,000 meters before stretching out to an open water lead over the latter part of the race and a win of 5.301 seconds.
In the afternoon, all three varsity fours were winners. The 1V4 and 3V4 bested their respective fields by more than seven seconds each in wire-to-wire wins. Both boats used fast starts to build significant leads, and only widened those leads throughout the race. The 2V4 event was much tighter with a winning margin of 3.930 seconds, but again it was Michigan crossing the finish line first after pulling away from Duke. With their victories today, Michigan's first four and second eight both avenged their result from the Big Ten-ACC Challenge at the end of March, when Duke got the better of U-M.
The first novice eight placed second in the morning after the Vols moved through the Wolverines and overtook a lead they would not relinquish. The 2N8 race was a tight event. U-M and Rutgers were bow ball to bow ball, trading inches over the first 1,000 meters with U-M barely ahead. Over the latter part of the race, Rutgers inched into that slim lead and overtook the Wolverines, winning in a photo finish by .365 seconds.
The afternoon session saw the 1N8 take third in their heat by about two lengths behind Duke and UCLA. The 2N8 boat won a close race over Iowa, defeating the Hawkeyes by 1.435 in another photo finish. It was a tightly contested event throughout, and U-M's mettle over the final sprint proved enough to hold off the charge from Hawkeyes.
Saturday's (April 20) second day of Big Ten Invitational racing will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the 2V4 event. The Wolverines will mostly compete against Ohio State, Brown, and SMU.
