ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team (14-3, 2-0 B1G) continues Big Ten action this weekend, traveling to Maryland (9-6, 1-2 B1G) on Saturday (March 23) for a noon match and Rutgers (9-5, 0-3 B1G) on Sunday (March 24) for a 1 p.m. start.
Notes
• Michigan (14-3, 2-0 B1G) takes its six-match winning streak on the road, heading east to face Maryland (9-6, 1-2 B1G) and Rutgers (9-5, 0-3 B1G). Michigan did not play either team in the last two regular seasons, only facing off against the Terrapins in the 2022 and 2023 Big Ten Tournaments.
• Michigan's six-match winning streak is its second-longest of the season after winning eight straight from Jan. 21-Feb. 11 on the strength of making a run to the championship match of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
• Michigan is playing at both East Coast Big Ten schools for the first time since the 2020-21 season when U-M got a 6-1 win at Rutgers (March 13, 2021) and a 5-2 win at Maryland (March 14, 2021).
• U-M is 15-0 all-time against Maryland and 8-0 against Rutgers. Maryland has one ranked singles player in No. 85 Selma Cadar. Maryland will face Princeton before welcoming Michigan, with Rutgers hosting Michigan State prior to playing the Wolverines.
• Michigan has won 19 straight Big Ten regular season matches after going 2-0 last weekend with wins at Ohio State (March 15) and against Penn State at the VTC (March 17). U-M's last Big Ten loss came at the hand of the Buckeyes on April 1, 2022.
• The Wolverines are one of five Big Ten teams to remain unbeaten as Big Ten play takes over the rest of the schedule. U-M is joined by Wisconsin (3-0), Northwestern (2-0), Illinois (2-0) and Iowa (2-0) as unbeaten teams.
• Kari Miller picked up a pair of wins at the top spot in Michigan's wins over Ohio State and Penn State, running her winning streak to five matches. She is up to 90 career wins, becoming just the 13th Wolverine in program history to reach the mark. With five more wins, she will break into the top 10 in Michigan history without even playing a fall season during her freshman season. On the season, she is 25-7 in singles action with a 10-4 record at the top of the lineup in dual matches.Â
• U-M is 160-8 (.952) in Big Ten regular-season play under head coach Ronni Bernstein. She has led the Wolverines to 10 of the last 13 Big Ten championship titles awarded (no title awarded in 2020), as well as five tournament crowns since taking over prior to the 2007-08 season.
• Michigan stayed at No. 2 in this week's ITA team rankings. Michigan played seven matches against teams in the top 10 in this week's rankings, picking up four wins during non-conference play.
• U-M is back to having six players ranked in singles this week, highlighted by a career-high No. 3 ranking for Miller. Julia Fliegner is No. 19, Gala Mesochoritou is No. 44, Lily Jones is No. 68, Jaedan Brown is No. 102 and Piper Charney is back in at No. 115. Brown and Kari Miller stayed at No. 4 in the newest doubles rankings.
• Michigan is one of three schools nationally to have at least six ranked singles players.
• Singles play has been strong for the Wolverines in dual-match action. U-M is 53-21 in singles play, good for a .716 winning percentage. Charney (11), Jones (10), Miller (10) and Mesochoritou (10) have each reached double-digit wins in dual matches. Â
• Michigan is 11-0 when winning the doubles point this season and 3-3 without securing the match's first point, getting wins over No. 15 Cal, No. 5 NC State and No. 8 Pepperdine after falling in doubles play.
• The Wolverines return home next weekend, hosting Indiana on March 30 and Purdue on March 31 at the Varsity Tennis Center.Â
