ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan men's lacrosse team will unveil its 2023 Big Ten Tournament championship banner prior to the contest against the No. 7 Maryland Terrapins Saturday (March 23) at 2:30 p.m. The contest will be broadcast nationally via Big Ten Network, with Joe Beninati and Mark Dixon on the broadcast.
Notes
• The Wolverines enter the week ranked No. 19 in the Inside Lacrosse Media poll and No. 20 in the USILA Coaches Poll. Each of U-M's defeats this season have come against ranked teams -- Notre Dame (2) Virginia (3) and Harvard (16) The three teams own a combined record of 17-4.
• The Michigan attack unit of senior Michael Boehm (18, 19a), junior Ryan Cohen (18g, 15a) and graduate student Justin Tiernan (32g, 3a) form one of the best attack trios in the country with 105 points through eight contests, and have accounted for 56 percent of U-M's total points on the season. Tiernan leads the country in goals per game (4.00) while Boehm is No. 21 in points per game (4.62). With five regular-season games left, Tiernan is 13 goals shy of Boehm's single-season record of 45 (2023).
• With a goal and three assists against Notre Dame, Boehm enters the week with 209 career points after recently becoming the second Wolverine ever to reach the mark against Delaware (March 2). He is four points shy of the U-M career scoring record of 213 (Josh Zawada). He is also three goals shy of the program record for career goals (119, Zawada) and two assists from the assist record (94, Zawada)
• Cohen trails Ian King (2014-17) for third place in the career points list by one point. The Boca Raton, Fla., native boasts 72g and 70a for 142 points in his U-M career.
• Midfielder Christian Ronda has come on strong as of late, scoring six goals over his last two games and eight over his last three. The Princeton transfer owns 11 goals on the season with five assists (16 points) on the season.
• U-M is No. 10 in the country in scoring offense (14.50 goals/game), No. 10 in assists per game (9.00) and No. 12 in extra-man offense (48 percent) as well as No. 10 in points per game (23.50).
• Graduate close defender Cathal Roberts leads the Big Ten and No. 18 nationally in caused turnovers per contest with 1.88/game. As a team, U-M is tops in the conference and No. 12 nationally in caused turnovers per contest with 9.62/game.
• Senior faceoff man Justin Wietfeldt ranks No. 13 nationally in faceoff win percentage (61 percent) and No. 5 in the country in ground balls per game (9.25). Over the last four contests, he won 80-of-111 draws (72 percent) with 55 ground balls.
• The combined record of U-M's future opponents is 32-15. Every opponent, except for Ohio State is ranked in the top 20 of Inside Lacrosse Media poll. No. 5 Penn State, No. 11 Johns Hopkins and No. 18 Rutgers all make appearances in the rankings.
• Michigan will welcome back members of the 2023 Big Ten Tournament championship team at halftime. The championship banner honoring the team will also be unfurled and will be the first banner in U-M Lacrosse Stadium history.
• The Wolverines defeated the Terps twice in 2023, when the then-No. 2 Terps fell, 16-11, on April 1 in College Park. Michigan went on to capture the second win in the Big Ten Tournament championship by a blowout 14-5 score on May 6 in Baltimore.
