
Wolverines Start Homestand With Victory Over Washington

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team earned a 4-1 win over Washington on Sunday (Feb. 4) at the Varsity Tennis Center to kick start a three-match homestand.
The Wolverines took the early lead with the doubles point as Alex Cairo paired up with Nicholas Steiglehner for his first-ever dual match. They grabbed a 4-1 lead before giving up one game and finished with two straight for the 6-2 decision at court three. Will Cooksey and Patorn Hanchaikul also won 6-2 on court two. They took three break points en route to their second win as a pair this season. The matchup of Gavin Young and Jacob Bickersteth against the No. 12-ranked pair of Cesar Boucheleghem and Dzianis Zharyn was a battle with the Huskies leading 5-4 with Michigan on serve at 30-15 before the match was abandoned.
Cooksey put Michigan ahead 2-0, winning both of his sets at No. 5 singles 6-3 over Ivan Sodan, never trailing in the match. Cooksey is now 3-3 in dual singles play and 7-8 on the season. Steiglehner followed with matching 6-2 victories on court six. In both sets, he closed out with four straight game wins after being knotted at 2-2 in each.
The Huskies won its lone point on No. 3 singles.
Bickersteth clinched the victory for Michigan as the No. 61-ranked player topped Zharyn 6-4, 6-4. He is now 4-1 in dual singles and 13-4 on the season.
Young and Hanchaikul had both won their first sets but had the matches abandoned after Bicketsteth's win.
Michigan continues its three-match homestand hosting Notre Dame on Friday (Feb. 9) at 5 p.m. at the Varsity Tennis Center.
