
Michigan to Trek to Columbus for Big Ten Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team will take its turn competing for a conference title when it travels to Columbus, Ohio, for the Big Ten Championships. The four-day meet will start on Wednesday (Feb. 28) at 5 p.m. with the opening night relays and team diving exhibition event. The remaining three days will feature preliminaries that begin at 10 a.m. and finals that commence at 5 p.m. All four days will be streamed live on B1G+. Â

• Michigan is seeking its conference-leading 43rd team Big Ten championship and its first since winning in the 2020-21 season. The Wolverines lead all Big Ten programs with 537 individual conference champions.
• In the freestyle events, senior Bence Szabados owns the top time in the league in the 50-yard event, clocking a 19.22 at the Georgia Invitational in November. Junior Gal Groumi boasts the fourth-best mark in the Big Ten in the 100-yard race, logging a 42.53 at the Georgia Invitational; Szabados checks in at sixth with a 42.57. Reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year Eitan Ben-Shitrit sits third in the conference in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:39.99.
• Connor Hunt leads the Maize and Blue in the distance freestyle races, posting NCAA "B" cuts in the 500 and 1,650-yard events with times of 4:21.14 and 15:09.89, respectively. Hunt's mile time ranks inside the top 10 in the Big Ten.
• In backstroke, Jack Wilkening leads the charge, owning a top-five time in the conference in the 100- and 200-yard races with marks of 45.86 and 1:42.56, respectively. Ben-Shitrit ranks fifth in the league in the 200 back with a time of 1:43.08 and Groumi sits 10th with a mark of 1:44.28.
• U-M has displayed depth in the breaststroke events, led by Brendan Fitzpatrick , who checks in at eighth in the Big Ten in the 100-yard event with a top time of 53.14. Senior Ansel Froass owns a 200-yard time of 1:56.26, good for ninth in the league.
• Groumi and Tyler Ray highlight the Michigan butterfly specialists. Groumi leads the Big Ten in both the 100- and 200-yard events with times of 44.83 and 1:40.54, respectively. Ray sits fifth in the 100-yard fly, clocking a 45.84 at the Georgia Invitational.
• Michigan boasts three swimmers inside the top five in the Big Ten in the 200-yard IM. Groumi leads the way with a season-best time of 1:42.67 while Ben-Shitrit and Froass rank fourth and fifth with times of 1:43.65 and 1:44.79, respectively. Ben-Shitrit's best 400-yard IM time of 3:45.16 is good for fifth in the Big Ten.
• In diving, Cameron Gammage ranks eighth in the league in the one-meter dive with a top score of 380.85 while Kameron Liberman owns a top-10 score of 300.75 in platform diving.
