BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team claimed eight bouts, including the first four and three with bonus points, to roll to a dominant 30-6 win against No. 23 Indiana in its final Big Ten Conference dual on Friday night (Feb. 16) at Wilkinson Hall.
Among its match wins were a pair of good ones from non-regular starters in sophomore/freshman Nolan Wertanen, who set the tone with a first-period fall at 125 pounds, and senior/junior Joseph Walker, who used a late takedown to earn an upset decision at 174 pounds.
Wertanen pinned the Hoosiers' Blaine Frazier in the dual's first bout, fighting off a single-leg shot midway through the period before reattacking to lock up a cradle and get the fall at the 1:44 mark for his first collegiate dual win.
Walker, making a return appearance in his home state of Indiana, defeated 21st-ranked Donnell Washington, 4-3, in a wild match at 174 pounds. Knotted up at 1-1 late in the third period, Walker scrambled out of a Washington attack to spin behind for the takedown in the final 20 seconds, then gave up a locked-hands point and an escape to narrow the score. Both teams challenged calls in the third period, but Walker held on for the final 10 seconds to secure the win.
Senior/junior Dylan Ragusin, ranked fifth at 133 pounds, followed Wertanen's first-period pin with a commanding first-period technical fall, 19-4, against Isaac Thornton. Ragusin scored three quick takedowns on a double leg, ankle pick and go behind before transitioning a fourth to a cradle for an additional four back points. He finished a single-leg takedown -- his fifth of the bout -- at the 2:47 mark.
Freshman Sergio Lemley, another Indiana native, earned a 5-1 decision over 23rd-ranked Danny Fongaro at 141 pounds, scoring on a single-leg takedown in the first period before riding out the third to accumulate 2:11 in advantage time. Lemley, himself ranked 10th nationally, has faced ranked opponents in each of his last six matches; he's 8-4 against ranked opponents this season.
Graduate student Austin Gomez, ranked fifth at 149 pounds, used riding time to edge 13th-ranked Graham Rooks, 3-2, and bounce back from his first loss of the season. The wrestlers traded penalties in the second period, with Gomez giving up a point for locked hands while earning a stall point. He rode for most of the second and escaped quickly in the third to earn 1:18 in riding-time advantage.
Indiana got on the board at 157 pounds, before Michigan responded with three straight wins out of the intermission break. Fifth-year senior Cameron Amine, ranked 10th at 165 pounds, defeated Nick South, 4-1, after finishing on a big double-leg takedown in the final 20 seconds of the third and riding out the bout.
Senior/junior Jaden Bullock, ranked 18th at 184 pounds, rallied from an initial deficit to earn a lopsided 18-8 major decision over Roman Rogotzke. Bullock gave up the initial takedown then scored five of his own unanswered, mostly off go-behind attacks, and rode for 1:04.
Graduate student Lucas Davison, U-M's third Hoosier State native in the lineup, closed out the dual with a 4-0 decision against Nick Willham at heavyweight. Davison, ranked sixth nationally, earned a pair of stall points then rode out the entirety of the third period to finish with 1:54 in advantage time.
The Wolverines (7-4, 5-3 Big Ten) will close out their 2023-24 dual-meet slate next Sunday (Feb. 25) when they take on in-state foe Central Michigan at 2 p.m. at McGuirk Arena in Mount Pleasant, Mich.
