ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team kicked off its 2024-25 dual-meet slate with a 28-9 win over Columbia on Sunday evening (Nov. 17) at Crisler Center. The Wolverines claimed seven bouts and earned bonus points in five.
Three Wolverines earned their first collegiate dual wins -- two with bonus points and two in their dual-meet debuts -- while graduate student Jacob Cardenas also rolled to a dominant technical fall in his Michigan debut.
Michigan opened the dual meet with three straight bonus wins to build an early 12-0 advantage. Senior/junior Christian Tanefeu picked up his first dual win in his third collegiate appearance with a controlled 18-9 major decision against the Lions' Sulayman Bah at 125 pounds. Tanefeu took advantage of a big first period with two takedowns and seven back points off a pair of tilts before adding another takedown in the third.
Graduate student Dylan Ragusin and sophomore Sergio Lemley followed with major decisions at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively. Ragusin, ranked fourth nationally, beat Boris Witmer, 16-8, with four takedowns -- two in the first period -- and a reversal. Pursuing a takedown for the bonus win late in the third, Ragusin instead drew a pair of stall warnings and secured the major after his 1:33 in riding time. Lemley, ranked eighth at 141 pounds, defeated 27th-ranked Kai Owen, 12-4, with three takedowns, a reversal, and 1:28 in riding time.
Columbia earned decision wins at 149 and 157 pounds to cut the deficit. Freshman Zar Walker made his collegiate debut at the former weight and dropped a close 6-1 decision to Richard Fedalen on a first-period takedown.
Freshman Brock Mantanona also made his collegiate dual debut after the intermission break and cruised to an 18-3 technical fall over 25th-ranked Cesar Alvan at 165 pounds. Mantanona scored three takedowns in the first period, including a late bodylock, added a takedown and two near-fall points out of a second-period scramble, and countered an Alvan headlock attempt to end the bout at the 6:40 mark.
Senior/junior Joseph Walker, ranked 28th nationally, scored takedowns late in the first and third periods to earn a 7-1 decision against Jack McGill at 174 pounds and improve to 5-0 on the season. Senior/junior Jaden Bullock dropped a 3-2 decision in sudden victory to Nick Fine in the next bout at 184 pounds. Bullock required injury time after an overtime scramble, giving Fine choice with nearly 1:30 remaining, and Bullock was unable to ride out the frame.
Jacob Cardenas, ranked third at 197 pounds, rolled in his maize and blue debut with a 17-0 technical fall against Isaac Schmidt. He scored on a quick double leg and earned two four-point tilts in the first period, then added a takedown and a three-point tilt to end the match at 4:18. Previously a two-time NCAA All-American at Cornell, Cardenas took silver at 92kg freestyle at the U23 World Championships late last month before transitioning back to folkstyle and the college slate.
Senior/junior Dzhabrail Khurshidov closed out the dual with a 6-3 decision against Vincent Mueller in his first collegiate dual match. Khurshidov scored on an early single leg and rode out the first period before adding a reversal in the second. He finished with 1:58 in riding-time advantage.
