IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team closed out the regular season -- and snapped a three-game losing streak -- with a dominant 3-0 road win at No. 16 Iowa on Friday evening (Nov. 1) at the Hawkeyes' Grant Field. It was U-M's fifth shutout win in Big Ten Conference play.
Michigan broke through late in the first quarter, at 11:16, after an intercepted pass at midfield. Graduate students Erin Reilly and Lora Clarke charged the Hawkeye circle 2-on-1. Reilly fed it to Clarke on the left side; Clarke's shot was broken up by the Iowa defender, but she recovered and hammered a rebound attempt toward the goal. Reilly lunged and got her stick on it, redirecting it in for her seventh goal this season.
The Wolverines poured on the offense in the second half, including 16-0 shot and 9-0 corner differentials in the third quarter, and converted twice on corner rebounds to pull away down the stretch.
Senior Alana Richardson scored at 44:12 -- in the final minute of the third quarter -- for her career-high sixth marker of the season. Fifth-year senior Pilar Oliveros' initial shot from the top of the circle was saved, her rebound attempt was blocked, and the ball bounced to the right side to Richardson, who spun and launched it to the top-left corner of the cage.
Michigan added another just six minutes later, at 50:55 in the fourth quarter. Reilly, at the top of the arc, passed the ball to her senior/junior stick stopper Claire Taylor, got the ball back a few steps into the circle but had her shot blocked. It rolled to the left, where senior/junior Abby Tamer one-timed it through the Iowa goalkeeper's pads. It was Tamer's team-leading 12th goal of the season.
In all, Michigan outshot the Hawkeyes 23-2 and outcornered them 11-1. Sophomore/freshman goalkeeper Hala Silverstein did not face a shot on goal. Iowa's best chance came on its fourth-quarter penalty corner, which Tamer blocked before it was cleared by Taylor. Iowa goalkeeper Mia Magnotta stopped seven of 10 U-M shots on goal.
Michigan (12-4, 5-3 Big Ten) will kick off postseason play at the Big Ten Tournament next Thursday through Sunday (Nov. 7-10) at Maryland Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex in College Park, Md. Michigan, the No. 3 seed, will open up in the first quarterfinal contest against No. 6 seed Indiana at 5 p.m. on Thursday (Nov. 7). The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
