ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan graduate student Jacob Cardenas is set to compete at the United World Wrestling (UWW) U23 World Championships this week in Tirana, Albania. Cardenas previously earned U23 world silver in 2022 and bronze in 2023. He qualified for his third straight world team after sweeping Northern Iowa's Wyatt Voelker, 9-1 and 8-0, in the best-of-three championships at the U23 Men's Freestyle Nationals in June.
The U23 World Championships will be live-streamed on FloWrestling in the United States. Brackets and updated results will be provided by United World Wrestling on uww.org and the UWW mobile app.
Each bracket will be contested over two days. Qualification rounds are scheduled for 4:30 a.m. ET on Friday (Oct. 25), with semifinals at 10:45 a.m. Day two begins with repechage matches at 4:30 a.m. ET and medal rounds at noon on Saturday (Oct. 26).
A native of Kearny, N.J., Cardenas is a two-time All-American at 197 pounds, earning NCAA finishes of fourth (2024) and eighth place (2023). He is also a three-time NCAA qualifier while representing Cornell. Cardenas captured the EIWA 197-pound title in 2023, is a two-time EIWA finalist, and a three-time unanimous All-Ivy League honoree. He compiled a 71-22 record over three competitive seasons at Cornell, including a 28-8 mark last year.
