Michigan Defeats Oakland in Charity Exhibition at Little Caesars Arena

DETROIT, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team kicked off the 2024-25 season with a 92-48 charity exhibition victory over Oakland on Sunday night (Oct. 20) at Little Caesars Arena.
Leaders and Best
U-M had five players in double-figure scoring. Will Tschetter led the way with 15 points off the bench on 6-for-8 shooting. Roddy Gayle Jr. added 13 points, Sam Walters scored 12 on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc, and Vladislav Goldin and Danny Wolf added 11 points, while Wolf had a double-double with 13 rebounds.
First Half
Despite a slow start, Goldin helped Michigan jump out to a 7-2 start in the first 4:10, scoring four of the Wolverines' first six points. Oakland responded with a run of its own, but Walters and L.J. Cason sparked an 8-0 Michigan response, with the Wolverines making six of seven field-goal attempts to grab a 24-12 lead with 11:07 to play.
After a Wolf three-pointer with 7:53 to play, Michigan went on another 8-0 run, with Oakland going 0-for-5 over a three-minute period. Oakland responded with a bucket of its own, before Walters hit his third three of the game to extend Michigan's lead to 15 at 37-22. The Wolverines recorded 12 assists in the half compared to Oakland's two.
Michigan closed out the half with a 6-0 run over the last 1:19, capped off by a Gayle three-pointer in the final seconds, leading Michigan with 11 points in the half. The Wolverines made six of their last eight field-goal attempts, while Oakland closed out the half going 1-for-10 without a field goal over the final 4:49 of play. Michigan shot at an efficient clip, going 60 percent from the field and 53 percent from three to close the half with a 48-26 lead.
Second Half
In the second half, the Michigan guards continued to find Goldin in the post. With 14:09 to play, Nimari Burnett assisted Goldin's fifth field goal of the game. The Michigan offense then went cold in the middle of the half, being held to 2-for-13 shooting until the 10:35 mark, before Cason sparked a 12-0 Michigan run over 2:24 to give Michigan a 72-40 lead. Michigan ran away with the game from that point, outscoring Oakland 20-8 in the final 10 minutes to earn the victory in Detroit.
What's Next
U-M will play their second charity exhibition contest, hosting Toledo on Friday (Oct. 25) at 7:30 p.m. at Crisler Center. The game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
