COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Julia Fliegner of the University of Michigan women's tennis team punched her ticket to the 2024 NCAA Singles Championship, reaching the finals of the singles main draw and the doubles main draw with Reese Miller as the Wolverines wrapped up play at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships on Tuesday (Oct. 15) at the Ty Tucker Tennis Center.
Fliegner is the first Wolverine this season to qualify for postseason action, earning her berth by reaching the singles championship match. Fliegner tore through the singles main draw, not dropping a set until falling 6-1, 6-1 in the final to No. 23-ranked Luciana Perry of Ohio State. It was the second straight season that Fliegner advanced to the championship match.
Piper Charney fell one match shy of punching her ticket to the NCAA Singles Championship, falling to Perry in the semifinals in three sets, 4-6, 7-6 (9), 7-5 in a rain-delayed match. Charney got the break she needed at 5-4 in the opening set when Perry double-faulted on game point. She consolidated the break and served out the set in the ensuing game to get the win.
Following a lengthy rain delay, Charney fell behind early in the second set before fighting to get it back on serve where it eventually went to a breaker. Charney had a pair of match points in the latter stages, but Perry strung the final two points together in an 11-9 win. Perry pulled out a 7-5 win in the final set to advance to the championship match against Fliegner.
U-M made up half the quarterfinalists in the event, with Emily Sartz-Lunde and Lily Jones each making a run to the final eight.
Fliegner teamed up with Miller to finish runner-up in the doubles main draw as the duo went 4-1 at the event. The pair reached the championship match after pulling out a 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (5) win over Northwestern's Britany Lau and Mika Dagan Fruchtman in the semifinals. Fliegner and Miller fell to No. 5-ranked Alina Mukhortova and Maria Sholokhova of Wisconsin, 6-1, 6-3, in the championship match.
Jones and Jessica Bernales made a run to the semifinals of the doubles main draw before falling to the aforementioned No. 5 Wisconsin duo.
Michigan continues fall action in two weeks, heading to the MSU Invite in East Lansing, Mich., Oct. 25-27.
