
Janess, Sung Lead Wolverines to Eighth at Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invite

» With a closing 291 team tally, Michigan's 872 54-hole total gave the Wolverines an eighth-place finish at North Carolina's Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational from the Finley Golf Club in Chapel Hill.
» For the second straight event, Mara Janess (t-15th) and Sydney Sung (t-19th) paced the Wolverines. Their top-20 finishes gives U-M three straight events with at least two Wolverines among the top 20 individually.
» Janess tied her career-best 54-hole event total for a second straight event at 216 (70-73-73). She led the Wolverines for the second consecutive tournament.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- For the second straight tournament, redshirt sophomore Mara Janess (tied for 15th) and junior Sydney Sung (tied for 19th) finished as the top two Wolverines with career-best performances, as the duo guided the University of Michigan women's golf team to an 872 54-hole total and an eighth-place finish today (Sunday, Oct. 13) at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational at the Finley Golf Club.
In a repeat performance from her last outing at the Mary Fossum Invitational hosted by Michigan State University, Janess tied her career-low 54-hole tally with a 216 (70-73-73). With that total, she posted a second straight top-20 individual finish as she tied for 15th among the 90-player field. Janess began the weekend by posting a career-low 70 (even) in the first round, topping her prior best by one shot. She has fired six straight rounds of 73 or better over her last two events.
Following Janess' lead, Sung set a career-best 54-hole total for a second straight event, lowering her tally from the Mary Fossum Invitational (218) by one shot as she recorded a 217 (71-73-73) at the Finley Golf Club. With her second straight top-20 finish, she has fired five of her last six rounds at or below 73, nearly mirroring Janess.
After opening with a pair of 75s, junior Lauren Sung closed with a season-best 70 (even) in the final round to vault herself 24 spots and tie for 30th with a 220 total. Despite finishing 53rd with a 225 total, freshman Suzie Tran highlighted her weekend by posting a career-best 71 (+1) in the second round. Additionally, sophomore Grace Wang, who tied for 54th with a 226 total, shot a career-low 72 (+2) in the second round.
Michigan opened with a 292 in Friday's first round, ending the day in a four-way tie for sixth. Despite improving Saturday with a 289, U-M fell to ninth place with a 581 total after 36 holes. With a final-round 291, the Wolverines jumped one spot to finish eighth among the 17-team field.
The Wolverines have one tournament remaining on their fall slate. U-M closes October by heading to Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, Monday through Wednesday (Oct. 28-30) for the Nanea Tournament. Hosted by Stanford, the three-day, 54-hole event is scheduled to be played at the prestigious Nanea Golf Club.
