
Michigan Rolls Nevada in Opening Match of ITA Kick-Off

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team (2-1) dominated to win its first match of the ITA Kick-Off over the University of Nevada (1-1), 4-0. The Wolverines will face Stanford in the championship match on Sunday (Jan. 28) at 2 p.m. at the Varsity Tennis Center.
The Wolverines won the doubles point and claimed three singles wins after winning all six first sets for to claim the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Jacob Bickersteth and Nicholas Steiglehner won 6-2 at No. 3 doubles, in their first-time pairing in a dual match this season. No. 31 ranked Gavin Young and Nino Ehrenschneider solidified the doubles point with a 6-2 win at No. 1 singles. Tied at 2-2, the duo rattled off four straight points for the victory.
Young, ranked No. 9 in singles play, made quick work of Matheo Coupu on court 1, cruising to a 6-0 first set and jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set before finishing 6-2. Young is now 2-1 in dual play and 8-5 overall in singles.
On the next court over, Patorn Hanchaikul won his sixth straight singles match with back-to-back 6-1 sets over Remy Tregoures.
Will Cooksey clinched the match point on court 6 with 6-1 6-2 wins over Greg Valente to improve to 2-1 in dual singles.
Bickersteth was moments away from winning on court 2, leading 6-4, 4-1. Bjorn Swenson held a 6-2, 4-3 advantage and Ehrenschneider was on top 6-2, 5-6 at No. 3 before the matches were abandoned.
The Wolverines will play in the championship match tomorrow versus Stanford, with the winner advanceing to the ITA National Championships in New York.
