COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Despite leading by 12 points at halftime, the University of Michigan men's basketball team could not hold off a second-half surge by Maryland and fell 64-57 to the Terrapins on Thursday night (Jan. 11) at Xfinity Center.
Leaders and Best
Olivier Nkamhoua led Michigan with 18 points and seven rebounds and surpassed 1,000 points for his career (1,003). He shot 8-for-16 from the field. Terrance Williams II scored 10 points, and Jaelin Llewellyn scored nine points, including a pair of three-pointers.
The Turning Point
A Maryland three-pointer with 7:56 remaining in the second half gave the Terrapins a 49-48 lead -- its first since the 7:46 mark of the first half -- and completed a comeback from a 12-point halftime deficit. A Tarris Reed Jr. bucket briefly put the Wolverines ahead, 50-49, but that was their last lead of the contest.
Second Half
Michigan's halftime lead (33-21) was cut to six, 35-29, with a 6-0 Maryland run and took an early timeout at the 17:43 mark. The Terrapins (10-6, 2-3 Big Ten) inched closer and cut an eight-point Michigan lead down to three points over a 35-second span with a three-pointer and a layup off a Wolverine turnover and Michigan (6-10, 1-4 Big Ten) led 39-36 with 14:42 remaining.
At the 7:56 mark, a Maryland three gave the Terrapins their first lead since 7:46 on the clock in the first half. After both teams made three straight field goals, Maryland held onto a 52-50 lead over Michigan with 7:09 remaining. Over the next 2:20, the home team went on a 6-1 run to extend its lead to seven points, leading Michigan 58-51 with 4:49 left in the game.
Maryland did not make a field goal for the rest of the game, but Michigan could not capitalize on the Terrapins' shooting woes. The Wolverines made two of their final 10 field-goal attempts and did not score a point over the final 2:38. Down three points, 60-57, Michigan had the ball underneath its own basket with 35 seconds left but the opportunity to tie the game fell short.
First Half
After trailing 6-2 at the 16:28 mark, Michigan went on an 8-0 run over the next 5:50 and led 10-6 with 10:38 remaining. Over the stretch, Maryland went scoreless for more than six minutes ended by a pair of free throws at the 10:01 mark.
Despite its troubles, Maryland mounted a comeback and took a 13-12 lead with 8:35 left. The momentum quickly shifted toward U-M as the Wolverines made their next five field goals and went on a 13-2 run over the next 3:44 to lead 25-15 with 4:51 remaining.
Llewellyn made his second three-pointer of the game with nine seconds left in a hot-shooting first half for the Maize and Blue. The Wolverines hit eight of their last 10 shots to finish at 50 percent from the field (11-for-22), which included a 5-for-9 showing from beyond the arc (55.6 percent) an led 33-21 at halftime.
