MALIBU, Calif.– The University of Michigan men's tennis team competed in the Malibu Showdown on the campus of Pepperdine this weekend, taking on the host Waves, Louisville and Kentucky from Friday through Sunday (Sept. 22-24) at Ralphs-Straus Center.
Jacob Bickersteth won all three of his singles matches, taking down Pepperdine's Maxi Homberg 6-3, 6-3, Andre' Steinbach of Louisville 6-4, 6-3 and took a three-set match over Charlelie Cosnet (Kentucky) 2-6, 7-6 (2), 10-4. Nicholas Steiglehner went 2-1 in singles with straight-set wins over Tyler Davis (Pepperdine) 6-2, 7-5 and Piet Steveker (Louisville) 6-2, 6-3.
The Wolverines doubles pairs were in true form, winning seven of nine matches on the weekend. The preseason-ranked No. 25 duo of Gavin Young and Nino Ehrenschneider secured a 7-6 (5) win over George Davis and Linus Carlsson Halldin (Pepperdine) on Friday (Sept. 22). Young paired with Bickersteth for wins over Louisville and Kentucky on Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 23-24). Bjorn Swenson went 3-0 in doubles, earning two 6-2 wins alongside Will Cooksey and a 6-3 victory with Mert Oral over a Kentucky's Matt Rankin and Christopher Clement on Sunday.
Michigan is back in action beginning Monday, Oct. 2 when it participates at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
