ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan wrestling team has added four standout graduate transfers to its 2023-24 roster, head coach Sean Bormet announced on Wednesday (May 31). NCAA champion Shane Griffith and fellow multi-time All-Americans Michael DeAugustino, Chris Cannon and Lucas Davison all signed their National Letters of Intent and will join the Wolverines this summer.
"We couldn't be more excited to add these four high-character men to our program," said Bormet. "Lucas, Mike, Chris and Shane are all proven winners and bring tremendous experience, success and leadership qualities to Michigan. They're serious student-athletes, who are dedicated to excelling in all areas of life and have big goals both on and off the mat. They represent everything we value here, and I expect they will be a great fit with our returning guys as well as role models to our talented incoming freshman class."
Griffith, a native of Westwood, N.J., captured the 165-pound NCAA title in 2021 and, to many, then became the public face for the reinstatement of the 11 dropped Olympic sports, including wrestling, at Stanford University. He is a four-time All-American, earning NWCA first team honors in 2020, and a two-time NCAA finalist (2021, '22) at 165 pounds. He boasts a 112-13 career record, including a 28-5 mark this past season.
Twice named the Pac-12 Wrestler of the Year (2020, '21), Griffith added Pac-12 Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors in 2023 and is a two-time Academic All-American (2020, '21). He earned a bachelor's degree in science, technology and society in 2022 and is currently finishing a master's degree in communication from Stanford. He will wrestle at 165 or 174 pounds for the Wolverines.
DeAugustino, a native of Palm Coast, Fla., is a two-time All-American at 125 pounds, earning NWCA first-team honors in 2020 before placing fourth at the 2022 NCAA Championships. He is a four-time NCAA qualifier, also reaching the Round of 12 as a sophomore (2021). He has placed top five at the Big Ten Championships in all four years at Northwestern and carries a 67-36 career record.
A three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and two-time NWCA Scholar All-American, DeAugustino earned a bachelor's degree in journalism in 2022 before adding a master's in sport management this spring. He will wrestle at 125 pounds for Michigan.
Cannon, who joins the Wolverine program with two years of eligibility, is a two-time All-American at 133 pounds after earning back-to-back seventh-place finishes (2021, '22) at the NCAA Championships. He is a three-time NCAA qualifier and has compiled a 71-23 career record over four seasons at Northwestern.
A native of Oceanport, N.J., Cannon represented the USA at the 2021 U23 World Championships, where he took fifth place at 61kg/134 pounds. He will graduate from Northwestern this spring with a bachelor's degree in learning and organizational change and is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten and NWCA Scholar All-America honoree. He will wrestle at 133 or 141 pounds for Michigan.
Davison, a native of Chesterton, Ind., is a two-time All-American at Northwestern, earning NCAA finishes of fifth (2023) and sixth (2022) since bumping up to heavyweight prior to his junior season. He is a four-time NCAA qualifier and earned NWCA Honorable Mention All-America honors at 197 pounds in 2020. He owns a career record of 91-32, including a 53-15 record at heavyweight the last two seasons.
Davison captured junior freestyle world silver at 92kg/202 pounds in 2019. A four-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and three-time NWCA Scholar All-American, he earned a bachelor's degree in learning and organizational change in 2022 and added a master's in management studies this spring. His older brother, Andrew, previously wrestled at Michigan (2018-21) and graduated with a bachelor's degree in political science. Lucas will wrestle at heavyweight for the Wolverines.
