WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team ran its winning streak to five, shutting out Purdue 4-0 on Saturday afternoon (April 8) at the Schwartz Tennis Center. U-M moved its Big Ten record to 8-0, remaining on top of the conference standings.
Michigan grabbed the early lead by virtue of the doubles point, winning with a new-look lineup by taking victories at No. 1 and No. 2.
At the top spot, Jaedan Brown and Andrea Cerdan coasted to a 6-2 win in their first match as a pair since last season.
Purdue evened the doubles ledger with a win at No. 3, turning attention to the match at No. 2.
With the doubles point coming down to the match at No. 2, Lily Jones and Julia Fliegner were down a break at 4-3. The duo turned it on from there, winning the final three games to put the first point on the board for U-M with a 6-4 decision.
Jones wasted little time extending Michigan's lead to 2-0, dropping just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5.
Fliegner accounted for Michigan's third point of the afternoon with a straight-set win at No. 4. She went up a break early in the first set at 3-1, keeping it throughout in the 6-2 win. Fliegner used the same recipe in the second set, dropping just one game in the 6-1 victory to put Michigan on the brink of the team win.
Gala Mesochoritou did the honors moments later, taking a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6 when her opponent double faulted on match point. Mesochoritou took over in the middle stages of the first set, winning four of the final five games to get the win. The second set was nearly a carbon copy of the first as she put the deciding point on the board for the Maize and Blue.
Brown was just one game away from winning at No. 2 as the remaining matches were abandoned. It marked Michigan's fifth shutout of conference play.
Michigan wraps up the road portion of its regular-season schedule Sunday (April 9) at Indiana at 11 a.m.
