BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team rolled to its sixth straight victory, winning the first six points in a 6-1 win over Indiana on Sunday afternoon (April 9) at the IU Tennis Center. With the win, Michigan compiled a 5-0 record in Big Ten road matches.
U-M struck first in the team match, getting a pair of dominant wins on the doubles court at No. 2 and No. 3.
Michigan's No. 3 duo of Kari Miller and Merri Kelly breezed to a 6-0 win, their first victory together as the first match off court.
Lily Jones and Julia Fliegner clinched the first point of the match behind a 6-2 win at No. 2. The Wolverines dropped the first two games before reeling off six straight games to put the first point on the board for the Maize and Blue.
Michigan won all six first sets in singles action after Gala Mesochoritou wrapped up a 7-5 win at No. 5, winning the final two games to avoid the tiebreaker.
Jones pushed the Michigan lead to 2-0 with a clinical 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6. Jones jumped out to big leads in both sets, riding the early advantage to a straight-set win.
Fliegner quickly followed with Michigan's third point of the match, recording a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 3 for her second singles win of the weekend. She went up a break at 4-2 in the first set and did not give it back, getting the 6-4 win. In the second, Fliegner won three of the first four games to take control en route to the win.
Miller did the honors moments later as she and Jaedan Brown were each one game away from winning. Miller won the race, dropping just three games in a 6-1, 6-2 triumph. After easing to the first-set win, Miller took the first three games of the second set and never looked back for Michigan's fourth point of the match.
Michigan's lead grew to 6-0 rather quickly after that as Brown and Cerdan each won their matches over the next several minutes. Brown recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win at the top of the lineup, getting a break midway through each set to get her seventh win at No. 1.
Cerdan won a roller coaster match at No. 4, extending Michigan's lead to 6-0. She won the first three games of the first set, holding on for the 6-4 win. She dropped the first three games of the second before winning six straight games to remain unbeaten in Big Ten singles action at 7-0.
Indiana got on the board with a three-set win at No. 5, with a 10-point tiebreaker played in lieu of a full third set.
U-M returns home to the Varsity Tennis Center next weekend for a pair of matches, first hosting Penn State on Saturday (April 15) at noon. Michigan's senior class of Nicole Hammond and Cerdan will be honored prior to the match as part of senior day.
