GALLOWAY, N.J. -- With heavy rain forcing the cancelation of the final round, the University of Michigan men's golf team finished 13th Sunday (April 30) with a 612 total at the 2023 Big Ten Championships played at the Galloway National Golf Club. Sophomore Hunter Thomson led the Maize and Blue tying for ninth playing even-par at 142 (75-67).
For the second time in three days, heavy rain wreaked havoc on the 70-golfer field at the Galloway National, but this time the weather was too much as the coaches met and elected to cancel the final round after anywhere from eight to 10 holes were played in Sunday's final round.
For the first time since the 2005 conference championships, the tournament had a round canceled due to weather. The last time the Big Ten Tournament finished as a 36-hole event was 97 years ago (1926).
With four golfers among the top five, No. 3 Illinois won its eighth straight conference title with a 560 (-8) 36-hole total. The Illini were 17 shots ahead of Northwestern (298-279/577) and 23 ahead of Wisconsin (299-284/583). Iowa's Mac McClear (73-66) and Northwestern's Daniel Svard (71-68) shared medalist honors at 139 (-3).
For the Wolverines, Thomson paced U-M for the eighth time in his second season. After battling rainy and windy conditions in Friday's (April 28) first round, he opened with a 75 (+4) to position himself among the top 15. As the skies cleared for Saturday's (April 29) second round, Thomson took advantage, racking up five birdies and 12 pars as he posted a season-low-tying 67 (-4) to move into the top 10.
Redshirt-junior Jack O'Donnell helped the Wolverines put two among the top 50 individually as he tied for 46th at 154 (83-71). Junior Will Anderson followed tying for 53rd at 157 (86-71).
The Wolverines will now wait to see if they will move on to NCAA Regional play on the NCAA Selection Show on Wednesday (May 3) at 1 p.m. on the Golf Channel.
