GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team competed its distance crew on the first day Stanford Invitational on Friday (March 31). Twelve Wolverines traveled to the west-coast meet, hosted by Stanford at the Cobb Track and Angel Field.
Michigan started off competing in the 1,500- and 5,000-meter races. The 5,000 meters was divided into four sections, with Samantha Saenz, Sam Tran, Ericka VanderLende and Kayla Windemuller competing in section two and Katelynne Hart and Anna Juul competing in section three. Tran led the way as the Wolverines' fastest runner, finishing in 15:52.65 for second place in heat two. Her time was a 13-second improvement on her previous best. The race also was the first meet back for Vanderlende and Hart, who both missed the indoor season.
In the 1,500 meters, Aurora Rynda, Cassie Kearney, Gabby Swider, and Alyna Lewis ran for the Wolverines. Rynda stole the show, running a career-best 4:20.28 to take second place in section four. Kearney also had a successful day, winning section seven of the 1,500 in 4:28.36. Lewis marked her outdoor debut with a lifetime best of 4:38.29.
Michigan will finish the Stanford Invitational on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. PDT at Cobb Track and Angel Field. The Wolverines will be represented by Fulcher, Gall and Lewis in the 800 meters.
