ARLINGTON, Texas -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team claimed four matches, including three of the last five, but its late rally fell short in a 24-15 defeat to No. 11 Oklahoma State in the second annual Bout at the Ballpark on Friday night (Feb. 3) at Globe Life Field.
With the dual starting at 141 pounds, Michigan earned ranked wins from Will Lewan, Matt Finesilver and Mason Parris, while Jack Medley earned an overtime fall at 125 pounds to put U-M within striking distance late.
Medley, ranked 20th nationally, broke a 1-1 deadlock against Reece Witcraft with his first fall this season, scrambling out of an OSU single leg to put Witcraft on his back and earn the pin at the 7:40 mark. Medley's pin pulled Michigan within three points, but the Cowboys answered with a pin from second-ranked Daton Fix in the final bout at 133 pounds to seal the dual.
Lewan, ranked 10th at 157 pounds, also earned an overtime win against 14th-ranked Kaden Gfeller, using three seconds of riding time to secure a 2-2 decision in the tiebreakers. Lewan largely pushed the action throughout the match and drew a stall warning in the sudden-victory frame but could not finish on several attacks. He rode Gfeller for 11 seconds in the tiebreaker and escaped in eight to secure the win.
Finesilver and Parris both used big third-period rideouts to secure decision wins at 184 pounds and heavyweight, respectively. Finesilver, ranked eighth, earned a 2-0 decision over 11th-ranked Travis Wittlake. He earned a quick escape in the second, scrambled out of a deep single-leg shot to preserve his lead entering the third and worked to flatten Wittlake out and earn the riding-time point (1:53).
Parris, ranked No. 1 at heavyweight for the third straight week, earned a 5-3 decision over 24th-ranked Konner Doucet -- Parris' seventh win over a ranked opponent this season. He struck on a quick double-leg takedown in the first but gave up a flash rear-standing score out a scramble later in the frame. He earned his escape in the second then rode out the third to accumulate 2:28 in time advantage. He improved to 22-0 on the season.
Michigan (9-3) will wrap up its Big Ten Conference slate next weekend, traveling to Iowa City to face Iowa at 8 p.m. CST on Friday (Feb. 10) before hosting Indiana at noon on Sunday (Feb. 12) at Cliff Keen Arena. Tickets for the IU dual are available through the U-M Ticket Office.
