
Crom Wins Gold on Final Day of Big Ten Championships

» Katie Crom took home gold in the 200-yard butterfly with a new personal-best time of 1:53.94.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team closed out the fourth and final day of the 2023 Big Ten Championships with a third-place finish on Saturday (Feb. 18) at Canham Natatorium, totaling 1,108 points.
Freshman Katie Crom was the star of the show for the Wolverines on the final night of the Big Ten Championships. Crom swam her way to a first-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a new personal-best time of 1:53.94. Crom shot out of a cannon and was leading after the first 50 yards but fell to third place after the next 50. In the final 50, however, she kicked it into high gear and sprinted past two opposing athletes to claim the gold. She was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year after collecting a first-place finish, second-place finish and two third-place finishes for a total of 86 points.
In the 100-yard freestyle, seven Wolverine swimmers combined for 104 points between to help Michigan secure its third-place Big Ten team finish. Lindsay Flynn equaled her personal best time of 47.50 to earn silver in the race, while Christey Liang finished seventh; both swimmers collected 'B' cut times. In the B-final, Megan Glass finished fifth, Natalie Kan sixth, Brady Kendall seventh and Claire Newman eighth, while Riley Francis picked up a sixth-place finish in the C-final.
Letitia Sim added a fifth-place finish to her championship resume in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:09.32 and Claire Donan finished sixth on the B-final; both earned NCAA 'B' cut times.
In the 1,650-yard freestyle, Kathryn Shanley was the top Michigan finisher and earned a 'B' cut with a time of 16:19.11, while Kathryn Ackerman finished with a time of 16:46.70.
In the B-final of the 100-yard backstroke, Noelle Kaufmann finished third and Casey Chung finished eighth.
On the diving side, Lucy Hogan finished eighth on the platform with a score of 249.10, helping Michigan add 22 points to its overall team score.
In the final event of the night, the quartet of Flynn, Liang, Kendall and Glass finished off the Big Ten Championships for the Wolverines with a second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:13.19, earning an NCAA 'A' cut time.
Kiarra Milligan, Riley Francis, Flynn, Sim, Glass, Kan, Kendall and Chung were all named to the All-Conference second team, while Crom was named to the All-Conference first team.
Michigan will be back in action on Sunday (Feb. 26) in Columbus, Ohio for the Last Chance Meet, hosted by Ohio State.Â
