
Michigan Toppled by Oregon on Last-Second Shot in OT

EUGENE, Ore. -- Despite a career-best 33 points from Dug McDaniel, the University of Michigan men's basketball lost 86-83 to Oregon in overtime to Oregon on Saturday (Dec. 2) at Matthew Knight Arena.
Leaders and Best
McDaniel led all scorers with 33 points, shooting 12-for-21 from the field and 7-for-12 from beyond the arc. Nimari Burnett and Olivier Nkamhoua each reached double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
The Turning Point
With the game tied at 83, Oregon's Jackson Shelstad drilled a deep three-pointer with 1.4 seconds remaining. McDaniel's last-second half-court heave missed, and the Ducks took the 86-83 win.
Overtime
Oregon (5-2) took a five-point lead in the first minute of the extra period, but the Wolverines (4-4) answered with five unanswered points of their own to tie the game at 78 with 2:18 to play. Will Tschetter answered an Oregon three with a triple of his own to tie the game at 81 with just over a minute remaining.
After a dunk by the Ducks, Nkamhoua made a fadeaway jumper to knot the game back up with 25 seconds left on the clock. With the game tied at 83, Shelstad nailed the game-winning three with 1.4 seconds remaining. McDaniel's last-second half-court heave missed.
Second Half
After an Oregon three-pointer to start the second half, McDaniel answered with a pair of triples to tie the game at 41. Then, Terrance Williams II made a three to cap off a 9-0 Michigan run, giving the Wolverines a 47-41 lead.
With 14 minutes remaining, Oregon's Brennan Rigsby went on a personal 9-0 run to give a three-point lead back to the Ducks with 12:43 to play. Michigan ended the spurt with its own 7-0 run behind another three from McDaniel, but Oregon would took the lead right back, outscoring U-M 7-0 over the next two minutes.
The Wolverines fell behind by as many as five down the stretch, trailing 69-64 with four minutes to play. However, Michigan outscored the Ducks 9-2 down the stretch behind a clutch triple from McDaniel to give the Maize and Blue a two-point lead with 24 seconds remaining. Oregon made a pair of free throws with 17 seconds to play to tie the game at 73, and despite a late U-M turnover and a pair of last-second shot attempts by Oregon, the game went to overtime.
First Half
Oregon jumped out to an early 11-9 lead after making each of its first three three-point attempts, but the Wolverines answered with five unanswered points -- including an and-one layup by Tschetter -- to claim a three-point advantage with 13:29 to play in the half.
The Ducks woent on to outscore U-M 11-5 over the next five minutes to retake a 22-19 lead. After a layup by Jaelin Llewellyn, Oregon poured in two more baskets to stretch its lead to five with 6:30 before the break. The two teams traded baskets through the end of the first half, and Michigan went into the locker room trailing 38-35.
What's Next
Michigan will open Big Ten play against Indiana on Tuesday (Dec. 5) at the Crisler Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 9 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on Peacock.
Notes
• McDaniel's career-best 33 points and seven three-pointers were the most by a U-M player since Jett Howard's 34 points and seven triples at Iowa last season (Jan. 12, 2023).
• With 12 points, Nkamhoua has reached double-figures in seven of eight games this season.
• Llewellyn returned to the lineup for the first time in nearly a year after suffering a season-ending ACL tear against Kentucky (Dec. 4, 2022) last season. He posted two points in 10 minutes of action.
• Michigan's 13 three-pointers were a season-best, while Oregon shot 10-for-16 (62.5 percent) from long range.
