IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A dominant second half powered by an early 11-0 run helped the University of Michigan men's basketball team earn its first Big Ten victory of the season, taking down Iowa 90-80 on Sunday (Dec. 10) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Leaders and Best
Tarris Reed Jr. led the way, and six double-figure scoring Wolverines, with a career-high 19 points and added six rebounds. Nimari Burnett went for 14 points and four assists, while Terrance Williams II scored 13 points behind a 3-for-6 performance from beyond the arc.
Olivier Nkamhoua chipped in 12 points and a team-leading 10 rebounds. Dug McDaniel scored 11 points -- all coming in the second half -- and Will Tschetter put up 10 points and pulled down six boards.
The Turning Point
Trailing 37-35 with less than a minute gone in the second half, Michigan responded with an 11-0 run to put Wolverines ahead by nine -- a lead they grew to as many as 20, but never relinquished.
Second Half
Opening the second 20 minutes, Michigan (5-5, 1-1 Big Ten) found itself behind 37-35 after two quick Iowa layups. The Wolverines responded with an 11-0 run, started by one of two three-pointers from Burnett and emphatically closed out with an alley-oop dunk from Dug McDaniel to Olivier Nkamhoua, to take a 46-37 lead. After five minutes, U-M held a 50-40 lead over the Hawkeyes (5-5, 0-2 Big Ten) behind five consecutive baskets.
With 12 minutes to play, a pair of made technical free throws from Tray Jackson pushed the lead to 20, 62-42, it's largest of the game.
U-M maintained control the rest of the way. While Iowa made seven of its last nine field goals to trim Michigan's lead to 10, Michigan made four of its last five to win going away.
First Half
Both teams struggled to start, but Iowa got on track first and took a 7-2 lead four minutes into the game with Reed being responsible for the U-M points. Michigan took its first lead, 16-15, after a pair of free throws from Jackson at the 13:09 mark. From there, the teams went back-and-forth with neither team holding a lead larger than three points until a Reed layup put the Wolverines ahead 22-17 with 8:43 left in the half.
Iowa quickly cut the lead back to one point, followed by U-M extending it back to five, 26-21, with 6:12 remaining on the first-half clock. After a two and a half minute scoring drought was put to an end with a bucket from Williams, Michigan retook a narrow 28-27 lead. Despite the scoring outage a pair of free-throw makes by Burnett with 25 seconds left gave Michigan a 35-33 lead heading into halftime.
What's Next
The Wolverines will return to Crisler Center to host Eastern Michigan on Saturday (Dec. 16) at 2:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
