
Michigan Dominates in Exhibition Win Over Northwood

ANN ARBOR, Mich. --Â The University of Michigan men's basketball team kicked off the 2023-24 season with an exhibition contest against Northwood University that saw the Wolverines defeat the Northwood Timberwolves 92-45 on Friday night (Nov. 3) at Crisler Center.
Leaders and Best
Tray Jackson led the Wolverines with 20 points and two rebounds, going 3-for-4 from the three-point arc and 8-for-10 from the field. Dug McDaniel finished with16 points with three assists while shooting 6-for-9 from the field and 3-for-5 from deep. Tarris Reed Jr. posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
First Half
Buckets from Reed and McDaniel put the Wolverines up 6-0 early in the game, and the U-M defense held Northwood scoreless for the first 3:30 of action. Reed went 1-2 from the free-throw line and then later Northwood got a breakaway dunk that trimmed the U-M lead to 7-4 at the first media timeout.
After the media timeout, Michigan went on a 10-0 run before Northwood hit a shot to bring the score to 17-6. The Wolverines continued the offensive attack, highlighted by a layup from Jackson and a three-pointer from Olivier Nkamhoua. A breakaway dunk from Jackson forced Northwood to call its first timeout of the night as Michigan extended its lead to 24-6.
Following the Northwood timeout, Michigan continued its dominance on offense, jump-started by a three-pointer and a layup from George Washington III. Though two shots by Northwood's Ethan Dunn and Jordan Jackson cut the U-M lead to 27-13, Michigan continued to dominate and did not let Northwood get within 20 for the rest of the game.
A 17-1 scoring run highlighted by three pointers from Nimari Burnett, Washington and McDaniel extended the U-M lead to 44-14 and forced Northwood to call its third timeout of the half with 3:32 left. Another pair of three-pointers from Burnett and Jackson along with layups from Nkamhoua and Terrance Williams II closed out the first half with Michigan leading 54-23.
Second Half
The momentum Michigan had at the end of the first half carried over to the second half as Nkamhoua kicked things off with back-to-back dunks. Jackson also came out of the locker room firing on all cylinders as he scored two layups and hit a three-pointer that built U-M's lead to 70-25 with 15:27 left before a media timeout. Following the stoppage in play, Jackson continued to contribute to Michigan's growing lead by completing a three-point play.
The Wolverines continued to dominate and baskets from Nkamhoua, Will Tschetter McDaniel pushed U-M to a 82-27 lead at the 11:49 mark. Michigan was on a 28-4 to start the half but Northwood's Collin Albert nailed a three-pointer and a jumpshot with U-M up by 50 with 11 minutes to play.
Michigan extended the lead even more with a jumpshot from Washington and three-pointers from Tschetter and Jackson, which brought the score to 90-36 with under six minutes remaining in the game.
Ian Burns, Harrison Hochberg, Jackson Selvala, Cooper Smith and Washington played hard for the Wolverines in the final minutes. Hochberg hit a shot with under one minute on the clock to seal a 92-45 victory for Michigan over Northwood.
What's Next
U-M will officially kick off regular-season play at Crisler Center against the Bulldogs of UNC Asheville on Tuesday (Nov. 7) at 8:30 p.m. The game will be televised live on the Big Ten Network.
