ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Gavin Young of the University of Michigan men's tennis team has been selected to compete at the Master'U BNP Paribas Championship in Honfleur, France.
Young is one of three U.S. men's players, joining Murphy Cassone (Arizona State) and Eliott Spizzirri (Texas). The event begins on Friday, Dec. 1 with the champion crowned on Sunday, Dec. 3. Other teams competing in the event are from Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Matches will consist of two men's and women's singles, one men's and women's doubles and one mixed doubles. The country that wins four of these seven matches wins the title.
The U.S. has won nine of the past 10 championships and 10 overall championships in the tournament's 15-year history. Former Wolverine Patrick Maloney was a member of the 2022 USA Team that won in 2023.
Young recently competed in the 2023 ITA Fall Nationals after reaching the semifinals of the All-American Championships. He went 6-4 this fall and with five wins over ranked opponents reached a career-best ranking of No. 9 in the ITA singles rankings. The 2022 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Young has twice been named second team All-Big Ten and was an All-American in doubles last spring.
