Wolverines Rout Gophers on Road Behind Phelia, Brown

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team used a 17-0 run in the third quarter and led by as many as 36 points in a 77-41 win over Minnesota to snap a two-game skid on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 29) at Williams Arena.
Leigha Brown topped 1,000 points for her Michigan career, getting there in 63 games as the fourth-fastest Wolverine to reach the mark. She finished with 20 points, five boards and three assists, with Laila Phelia leading Michigan with 22 points.
Emily Kiser, Cameron Williams and Greta Kampschroeder each went for eight points as U-M shot 43.5 percent (30-for-69) from the floor. U-M forced 21 Gophers turnovers, turning those into 21 points. Michigan also held a 45-37 advantage on the glass.
Minnesota struck first, but U-M responded with six straight on buckets from Brown, Williams and Phelia for a 6-2 Michigan lead at the 7:01 mark of the first quarter. U-M doubled up the Gophers, 12-6, on a layup from Phelia with 5:02 to go in the first.
U-M closed the first quarter on a 7-2 run, capped by a layup from Brown with 19 seconds remaining to give Michigan a 19-11 lead after 10 minutes.
Minnesota scored first in the second quarter, but Michigan again countered with six straight points from Williams, Brown and Jordan Hobbs for a 25-13 lead with 4:57 left in second. The Wolverines hit the half with a 34-23 lead after leading by as many as 14 points in the first half behind 12 points from Brown.
It was all Michigan in the third quarter as U-M outscored Minnesota 27-7 to take control of the contest. The Wolverines scored eight straight, starting with a Hobbs triple and capped by a Phelia longball off the Minnesota turnover for a 46-28 lead at the 5:42 mark.
The run continued following a Gophers timeout as U-M scored nine straight, including five from Kampschroeder, for a 55-28 advantage at the 2:52 mark of the third.
Michigan's lead never dipped below 24 the rest of the way, with all 13 Wolverines dressed seeing the floor. Whitney Sollom scored her first bucket of the season, as U-M finished with a 17-2 advantage in bench points.
Next up for Michigan is a Thursday evening (Feb. 2) matchup against Illinois at Crisler Center. Opeining tip is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
