ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan football team scored eight seconds into the game and iced it with a 17-point fourth quarter en route to 34-27 homecoming win over Maryland in its Big Ten Conference opener on Saturday (Sept. 24) at Michigan Stadium.
The Wolverines totaled 463 total yards of offense (243 rushing, 220 passing), the fourth consecutive game in which they have gone for 400 yards or more.
Junior running back Blake Corum recorded career highs with 30 carries and 243 rushing yards and scored two rushing touchdowns. Just a week removed from tying a program record with five touchdowns, Corum's rushing yards place him seventh among U-M's all-time leaders.
Sophomore quarterback J.J. McCarthy went 18-of-26 passing for 220 yards and two scores. Senior tight end Luke Schoonmaker and graduate-student wide receiver Ronnie Bell led the Wolverines with 72 yards, and Schoonmaker added a TD. Wide receiver Roman Wilson recorded a fourth-quarter touchdown.
Michigan (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) scored just eight seconds into the game when the opening kickoff bounced off the Terrapin returner's facemask and was recovered by Michigan on the 10-yard line. McCarthy connected with Schoonmaker in the end zone on the next play for a 10-yard touchdown -- the latter's first of the season.
The teams traded long field goals, with Maryland (3-1, 0-1 Big Ten) hitting from 53 yards -- the first points allowed by Michigan in the first half this season -- and graduate-student kicker Jake Moody answering with a 52-yarder to tie his career long, before the Terrapins surged ahead to take a 13-10 lead early in the second quarter.
Maryland's touchdown drive (13 plays, 75 yards) followed a Michigan fumble on the Terrapin 27 and ended with a two-yard scoring run to tie the game, while kicker Chad Ryland hit a 52-yard field goal -- his second in the half over 50 yards -- to give the Terps the lead.
Michigan retook the lead with just 22 seconds remaining in the half on a 33-yard Corum rushing touchdown on fourth-and-1.
After a scoreless third quarter, action escalated with 31 combined points in the fourth.
Wilson scored on a 20-yard catch on the second play of the quarter -- his third receiving touchdown and fourth overall of the season -- to widen the Michigan lead, but Maryland responded with a lengthy touchdown drive, going 75 yards on 10 plays on its next possession – though failed on its two-point conversion.
The Wolverines appeared to have the game in hand after Moody hit a 38-yard field goal and Corum scored his second touchdown on a 47-yard run -- his ninth touchdown of the season – following senior cornerback R.J. Moten's interception.
Maryland answered again with an 18-yard touchdown catch and two-point conversion to pull within seven points. The Terrapins attempted an onside kick, but Michigan recovered and took a knee on two plays to close out the game.
U-M will hit the road for the first time this season with a trip to Iowa next weekend (Oct. 1). Kickoff is scheduled for noon on Fox.
