ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan football team cam up short of No. 6-ranked Indiana 13-6 in overtime on Saturday (Oct. 24) at Michigan Stadium. The Hoosiers scored on the first possession of the extra period, but the Maize and Blue's last chance to continue its drive hit the turf on fourth down.
In the close contest, Michigan mustered just six points on four red-zone trips and was forced to punt five times.
The U-M defense put up a workmanlike performance in the losing effort, holding the IU offense to 212 total yards, less than half of what it averaged coming into Saturday's contest (449.3 ypg). Michigan particularly thrived defending the pass, recording four pass breakups and an interception, allowing just 81 yards through the air: the first time the Hoosiers have failed to eclipse the century mark in passing since Nov. 23, 2024.
Additionally, the Wolverines allowed just four third-down conversions on 14 attempts, including a fourth-quarter sack by Smith Snowden to force a punt.
Tommy Carr became the sixth true-freshman quarterback to start for U-M, joining teammate Bryce Underwood (2025), Tate Forcier (2009), Chad Henne (2004), Rich Hewlett (1979) and Rick Leach (1975). Carr completed 63 percent (20-for-32) of his passes for 167 yards.
After trailing for most of the contest, Michigan ran down the final 7:32 of game time, ending with a field goal by Trey Butkowski as time expired to even the score at six and send the game to overtime. On the final drive of regulation, U-M was perfect on three of its four third-down attempts, including a 24-yard completion to Channing Goodwin to move the ball into field-goal range.
Zeke Berry set up the first Michigan points of the game, returning his fourth career interception 37 yards to lead to a 29-yard field goal to cut the Indiana lead to three. Berry registered six total tackles and added another PBU to move him into the top 10 in program history with 25.
Chris Bracy followed up his Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors with another solid performance, totaling a career-high 13 tackles, including one tackle for loss.
For the second straight game, the Wolverines could not score in the first 30 minutes, recording two turnovers in the first half and making it inside Hoosier territory on just one drive, which ended in a missed field goal.
Michigan will head to Picataway, N.J., for a showdown with Rutgers next Saturday (Oct. 31) at SHI Stadium. The game is scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. kickoff on Big Ten Network.
